Who here hunts with 308?

I used my PH1200 with a bull barrel to punch coyotes, with a post as a rest. Damn bull barrel is heavy, lol. Now it’s used at service rifle shoots, mostly as a tease, C3 set up, bull barrel, bench stock and bipod, bahahaha. Take deer and such with an 1894 in 38-55, my grand dad use when he homesteaded and worked the Buffalo in the wainwright Buffalo park to support his farming habit.
 
I have to admit I am a 308 convert.
I grew up being told that 270 was perfect for everything, but a 308 was underpowered and 'just an American thing'. What could be worse?
I discovered that a 30-06 was pretty versatile. Lots of bullets available and plenty of room in that case for lots of powder.
I discovered that 303B was easy to shoot and pretty darned accurate.
But....the 'American thing' 308 is very similar to 303B...but faster...easier to find components for....more efficient with powder use than either the 303B or 30-06.
The 308 has some very capable offspring....the 243, the 260, the 7mm-08.
I discovered that the 308 is very easy to load for and rewarding to shoot in many platforms.
I have to admit I am a 308 convert....

The BEST off spring from a 308 Win is the Mighty Little 338 FEDERAL ! Awesome cartridge ! jmo RJ
 
I have always had a .308 in my hunting rotation. I have so many hunting rifles that no single caliber gets too much time afield. BUT, the .308win is my all time favorite. I just use bigger calibers when I hunt in Grizz territory up here in the NWT. I have 30-30, 300Sav,308,30-06,300winmag and 300weatherby mags just in 30 caliber. I still take my Rem Model7 in 308 out a lot. Its is light, handy and accurate. Its my favorite gun for knocking around.
 
Started with and shot my first Moose with a .308 BLR,

I have moved up & down the Cal range over the years. 300Win, 300WSM, .270, 7mmRM and currently 30-06 as my main.

With a good projectile choice like a Nos Partion or the like, I wouldn't hesitate to carry one afield again here in Ont.
 
Hunted moose with a 308 for the first time in close to 30 years, most others it's been 270 or a magnum of one sort or another. Very capable round in a good quality rifle.
 
I don't hunt anything bigger than varmint, at this point. That being said, my bench gun is .308 and there isn't much that is visible that I couldn't put a hole through. I'm confident that this caliber still has at least another generation of prevalent use. 6.5cm has only marginally improved BCE and it is at the expense of 75%+ a .308s barrel life.
 
Shot my first rifle killed deer with a Rem 700 BDL in 308, sold it because I got caught up in the WSM craze, then almost went down the Sherman craze, all great cartridges and very capable. But for where I hunt in Ontario and my bi annual trip out west, my big game rifle rotation is now a Win M70 FWT in 308 (newly acquired so it hasn't hit the field yet), Marlin 1895 in 45-70, and a custom 280AI. Pretty sure I can go where ever I can get a tag and kill what ever is on the menu with those three. And the bulk of the hunting will be with the 308. It is easy to find factory ammo, and reloading components for so one should never suffer from any shortages in the ammo dept, it is easy to shoot, not bad on recoil, and is very accurate in most guns. Whats not to like?
 
The last 3 bears i shot were with a 308 winchester
from 150 yards to 30 feet.
All were 1 shot kills.
All were 180 grains hornadies psp.
 
I grab my .308 any time i'm having a mixed bag hunt, deer, maybe bear, etc.

If i'm deer only i might go with a 6.5x55 or 7mm-08, moose maybe something bigger, but when you don't know what you'll see or where you'll see it, the .308 covers all your bases.
 
I may have done a little bit of hunting with one in a Mohawk inn the late 80's, but other than that I cannot recall ever seriously hunting with a 308 - I have put a moving van full of 308 ammo downrange over the years in Palma match, silhouette, and FTR rifles however!:rockOn:

I didn't have one for a long time, but I wanted to build a short-barreled heavy hitter on a pseudo-Scout concept. I wanted a short barrel, short receiver, mag-fed rifle with beater stock in .308 and an LPVO on a rail that could be swapped out for a red dot as backup. Should be compact overall, buttstock cartridge holder and a regular two-point sling for supported shooting.

Love it, super cool package. I expect it'll be along on a few hunts in the coming years as both backup and primary depending on conditions.
