Out of pure curiosity, who here hunts with the 308 win caliber? It's rare that I see rifles chambered in 308 for sale on the hunting re but I see a fair share in the precision shooting section although I've seen it being eclipsed by the 6.5's.
Seems like this cal is fading, who here still uses 308 to hunt? I have used mine to harvest a moose and a buck. But I usually reach for a magnum rifle when I head out now, but am switching back since most of the game I've taken was under 100 yards.

The best. Period.

PS: As a sound advice, i suggest to anyone to bring a 308 as a backup rifle. Sometimes, somedays, it will make your day. JP.

There are probably so few for sale because once you have one you quickly realize that it works just as well as anything else, for much less cost and recoil. At typical hunting distances it’s perfectly lethal on every species of NA game. No need for the vast excesses of magnum cartridges if your quarry is rarely visible beyond 300 yards.

since acquiring my ruger scout i tend to use the 308 more because i enjoy the ruger so much. its more rifle and less caliber choice.

I only shoot 30 calibre, and 308 is my favourite by far. I occasionally use 30.06 when hunting bigger game, and even use 300 WINMAG for those rare occasions I get a tag for something really big.

Great selection of ammo from whichever direction you approach it, ready rolled or brew your own. A great round all round!

Candocad.

A recent 308 fan here, and as mentioned, it does it's job with little fuss. I think you see them on the used gun racks so little because although they are vanilla, they are generally all you will ever need for most big game. Lots of choices in ammo, and you can find it everywhere.

My go to was the m14. Heavy for the carry but everything I wanted in the stand. 150 grain interbonds over 41.5 IMR4895 IIRC.

One of the happiest days of my life would be the day I get to use it in the stand again.

Have had many .308s, currently have a HB target and a 760. I don't think I've ever carried a .308 while hunting and wished it was a magnum...

308 has been my choice for many years. Only recently have I started to carry a 338 lapua in its place.

But that is due to technology more than anything else. My 338 lapua is 8lbs, 28" OAL and kicks less than my steyr scout in 308. I do have some areas I hunt where extremely long range opportunities exist to harvest game that are unable to be approached otherwise, so carrying the 338 gives me that opportunity to fill the freezer

Some calibers are like a fine, aged whiskey - and some are cheap, common as dirt, nothing special, but they get the job done. The .308 (along with .30-06, .270, 30-30, etc) fall into the latter category. Anyone can get a .308, find hunting ammunition at Walmart or Canadian Tire, and shoot something with it. It works for everything, and anyone can get it.

Savage 99 and Savage Axis .. both 308's. Great in the field and cheap enough to practice and warm up with. Both shoot minute of dinner...
