Who here hunts with a Ruger #1?

mmmmmmmmmmm

l had over 22 no 1 's over the years l havent lost count yet , they are a awesome rifle and as casull say they are a bigbore experimentors dream, but also can be made into a excellent target rifle . l only have one at this time, which is a 50-140,but l think l should own a 50-460 also?

I'm lucky enough to own three..... 20 years for one them. I am right handed but shoot left so was looking for something other than a left bolt. I have shot everything I ever went looking for and have never felt at a disadvantage. Custom 6mm, 1B- 270 and 1S - 338. They pretty much cover all my shooting needs.
From that cheeky coyote at 300+ to black bears at 50 ... or less
Having said that, I have also developed a lot of patience. Know the distance, pick the shot, use the right load.....not a whole lot differant from everybody with "back up rounds". As Lefty can tell ya...I'm not slow with another round :) that doesnt mean I need it but ya never know. I use the same principle as my BP rifle, after the shot keep your eyes on the target, learn how to load without looking down. It's not that hard, I can do it as fast or faster than most others with a bolt. With hunting loads the two larger ones will hold 1" MOA at 100, the little guy....more like <3/8". I have a number of rifles to choose from but when it comes down to it......I almost always take the " old 270"

Very nice Casull!

I have shot a few Ruger #1's but have never owned one :( . I have been thinking of picking one up like you Mark. I would like to get a 24" barreled 405 Winchester to try out.

I used to hunt with one in 7 rem mag. Very pretty wood, good accuracy, clunky trigger. Scratched the stock once so I sold it before I made it too ugly. IMO nicest production single shot made, I just prefer a bolt.

I've got a couple of them, a #1V in .22-250 and a #1B in .270 WInchester. If you're thinking of a big game rifle I can tell you that my #1B will shoot 130 grain bullets at 3200 fps (26" barrel helps) and 1/2" to 3/4" groups are the norm.

Chuck

I have a couple of them as well. I have a #1V in 6mm Remington and a #1B in .338 Win Mag. I have not hunted with them yet but that will change next year. I only actually own one bolt gun at the moment. I want to get one in Laminate/Stainless in something big!

I had two 7mm Rem Mags in 1B and a .338 WM in 1B. The .338 shot alright, but the one 7mm shot spectacular. I shot a buffalo with the one 7mm. I hammered a whitetail doe twice before my buddy could pull the trigger once, with the 7mm, so its all about practice. I defintely wouldn't feel outta sorts with a No.1 as my main companion..........Maybe a 358 STA, or a 300 H&H...hmmmmmmmm.
Well, you guys are all gunnutz, what about us poor gunslutz.

Ruger No1 AB Model

I have a great Ruger No1 AB Model in 7X57. The AB model doesn't come with rings. The only problem I have with it is the scope. I have a really hard time getting up to the scope, I have had to buy off set mounts but I still feel like I have to stretch my neck to see it.
Do I need a scope with longer eye relief???

I am only 5' 5" tall and I love single shots.
I also have a Ballard, Sharps, Browning 78, H&R Officers Model Trapdoor, Martini's, Greener, Remington Rolling blocks, and a Maynard No16.

I'm on the verge of telling myself I need one of these in .270 Win. The way I hunt, I think it's perfect for me. I really don't care if I pull the trigger or not, I just like being there. But I've got a funny feeling that they won't be building them for much longer. With the demise of one of the biggest firearms manufacturers, and the cost it must take to build a number one, I wonder how long they really have? And as for the NEF, I've had a couple. The only one I have still is a 25-06. To be honest, I only put one box of cartridges through it, Federals 100 grain Ballistic tip, and it didn't like them too much. About 1.5-2" groups. I may be turning it in on trade for the #1 though.

Yes you need a scope with longer eye relief.
Good point to bring up, something for any prospective No1 buyer to keep in mind!
No1's definitely are not good with crappy/cheap scopes, you'll be gettin out a step stool to climb on top of the damn thing in order to see through it. I had a very cheap scope on mine when I first got it (was poor back then) and actually had to build my own offset ring from an old spare ruger ring in order to mount it reasonably. It was ugly as sin but saved me a fortune at the time and worked okay.
That all got solved with a good Leupold. :)
I don't think No1's are the kind of rifle you want to mail-order a scope for.... because of the placement of mounts due to the f/b action you better try before ya buy (scopewise).
I think its great that Ruger (almost always) includes rings with their rifles, unfortunately they sometimes are the wrong diameter or hieght... a good store will exchange them for you as they usually have some extras kickin around. If they're selling you offset rings, look at a different scope first.
