Don't know if this has been brought up recently but I was interested in hearing from fellow CGN'ers who hunt, as to what the main importance in their hunt is. So let's hear it. Do you primarily hunt for meat and follow the "If it's brown it's down principle" or are you agressively targeting big bucks and don't care if you have tags in hand at the end of the season? I'd have done this as a poll but I wasn't sure how to do it. I personally like to hunt for big horns but at the end of the day(season) I'd sure hate not having some venison in the freezer. So I guess I fall somewhere in between. I'll target big bucks during the peak of the rut but after the rut's done I'll gladly shoot a nice fat spiker or forkhorn. For some reason I still have a hard time pulling the trigger on a doe and a fawn.

Having downed enough game over many years, I now hunt for a trophy. Bear hunt this year is a prime example, I saw at lest a dozen blackies, only one over 400lbs, and she was with a cub, and I don't shoot sows with cubs. So I came home with my tag.My youngest ended up with one about 250, good eating and a nice rug. Deer, saw a good buck, let my son have him. He's still in the I need to get one phase. I held out for a monster, didn't get him, all my lads tagged out on doe's and a few bucks. Only thing I shoot now without looking for size are partridge.:) and zombies, I'd shoot any of them:evil:

Depends on the game for me. Moose and elk I am mostly thinking of groceries...still I prefer to hunt bulls over antlerless game for the added challenge and excitement (when in rut). Whitetail and mule deer antlered tags are trophy hunts for me. Usually by the time I am getting serious about pursuing either of the two I already have some meat in the freezer so there's no pressure there.

I do both. Is Saskatchewan we are lucky with the amount of game and the number of tags we get/draw

Meat is doe hunting

Really in the end there is no right or wrong. If your a meat hunter then kill your meat and don't worry about the trophy hunters an vice versa. I love the challenge of chasing big old bucks/bulls but I'm happy to leave an unused tag in my pocket at the end of the season.

I don't hunt big game very often but when I do the focus is for some nice meat so I would rather shoot a smaller buck before the rut than a monster during. However if I were an avid big game hunter I would not bother with deer at all. I would hunt only Moose or Elk, much better eating IMO.

I hunt moose for meat, cows only. Whitetail and Mules for horns until last minute then does for meat. I get a kick out of guys that hunt for trophy deer until the last day and then shoot "a nice eater buck" Then complain how there are no trophy bucks around.

Most years, I take any legal animal in front of me...but that depends on the day and how the hunt is going. If I'm driving down a road grouse hunting for example, it's not likely to be shot.

This year since we were lucky enough to get a bull moose early, I decided I'd try and hold out for a big buck. Haven't seen one yet and if I burn my tags this year, that's alright with me.

I hunt mainly for the experience but enjoy the meat as well. My trophies are my pictures of the hunt, area I was in, weather conditions I encountered and fellow hunter I went with on that trip - I find this takes me back there far better than a trophy could.

Trophy hunter, its the challenge of finding and trying to out smart the big old bucks. If I wanted to fill my freezer I would be tagged out within the first couple of hours of the season. Plus between my friends and i , we get a moose tag almost every year that we split.

I hunt to enjoy the everyday experiences when I walk through the timber/prairies. I definitely don't shoot does or fawns, therefore that leaves bucks................mature bucks only. What I really enjoy is to experience someone else in my presence harvesting a deer. I get more of a thrill to witness their reaction during and after the kill, than for myself to harvest an animal.

I like getting the meat, and being from southern NB, there are few enough deer left around that if i tried to hold out for a monster buck i would probably have to be happy with the odd partridge or rabbit
