Who hunts/shoots with a big bore??

I switched to a 444 marlin about ten years ago and unless i'm hunting a field i won't carry any of my speedsters in the bush!!!!

And i mostly hunt a slug only area and my browning A-bolt shotgun is a dream!!!!!!!

I have a 458 american in a K98 FN mauser action. The only thing that bothers me about it is its tendency to crack wooden stocks. The first sign, besides a hairline crack in the wrist of stock....is at the rifle range it would shoot really, really, low, for no apparent reason. I load it with slightly less powder under the bullet now. Have yet to take a deer with it, the 30-06 and 30-30 got used this year.
 
I have a Marlin guide gun that I take into the thick cover for moose and a Trapper in .44 mag for deer in the thick stuff. Use Ghost ring sights on both. For Muzzle loader a Remington in 50 cal. with a 3x9 Leatherwood In-liner which I have yet to calibrate so it stays locked at 3 power.

to my mind the big bores are the only eway to go if all your shooting is under 150 yds (200 yds for the 45-70)

I bet you could fix the splitting thing with a good bedding job that included some internal cross-bolts. And there should be a small(.020") gap between the stock and the end of the rear receiver tang.:)

That is the way to fix it! I have done that on a number of rifles and it works every time. Cross bolt behind the recoil lug and one in the web between the mag box and the trigger.

It's not a big bore, but I gave Mullie's a try this year with my 8.6 x 72mm. Took it out to the CWD zone and took 11 Deer with it this year. The closest was 150yrds. and the farthest was 822 yards, all ranges taken with a Licia range finder. Got a like that ability to really "Reach Out and Touch Something."
 
I went deer hunting for the first time this season with my 12ga sluggun (it has a big bore :D) . I also have a .50 Cal muzzleloader that I fully intend to hunt with next season.

My 1885 in 45-70 was my go-to rig for the last couple of years. I just didn't make the cut to come north due to weight restrictions. Mind you I bought a 416 Rigby when I got here so that one will need to get out and limbered up soon.
