Who hunts with a 10 Gauge?

A 1 1/4 oz load was considered a big payload back in the day. It was only capable of achieving in a 10 ga. at one time and most hunters were like you Cat and handloaded for their big double guns. Nash Buckingham comes to mind writing tales of his duck hunting adventures with his gun he called Bo-Whoop. Thats a NICE gun you have in that picture!! Took me a second to realize the bird on the right was a Speck. I love the challenge of Specks in a field!!

I have a Walnut Browning BPS is 10ga. I only use it goose hunting from a blind. It's big, heavy, swings slow but reaches way out there. I use Black Cloud BBB for the most part, they pattern well and Walmart discontinued them around here and I got 20 boxes for $11/box on clearance.

Thanks Spank!
That big 10 has to be seen to be appreciated, the photo does not do the wood justice!
We had a few specs that day , it was a good morning.
I usually only shoot it with 1 1/8 loads but it handles the bigger loads no sweat even though it is not overly heavy
we have taken our vintage 10's after pheasants as well using 1 and 1 1/8 oz loads:cool:

Cat. Do you own a single ugly gun? Everyone you post is gorgeous!

I have a Spanish box lock side by side in 10 ga. I love it. I can fold geese out to 60 yards with it.
A couple of my buddies laughed as they saw me putting it together for a morning hunt. They were on their phones looking to buy one after I crunched 7 of 8 geese all over 50 yards. The one that didn't have his flight outright canceled took another shell while in the field. 1-3/4" oz bb works well
I've had a couple single shot 10 ga guns and really enjoyed them. I'll probably buy another

Ugly guns?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder they say!
I have an Ansley Fox that is not the prettiest thing in the World to my mind, but I'm sure some Fox collectors would go crazy to get it!
My son figures the Parker that is in my avatar is ugly, but I know for a fact that pudlepointer( who owns it now) figures t is as gorgeous as a beauty queen!!
Those big Spaniards are very robust and normally pretty well made as well, I have a few friends that use them in several different brands.
My Westley however will not stand up to the pounding that those modern guns will, it is a mid 1800's manufacture!

While I haven't done much in the way of migratory bird hunting in the last number of years, I still have my 10ga., 3 1/2" Mag SxS. An Aya. This is the second Aya I've had and I've hung on to this one because it has fairly decent wood.

There have been a number of guys that have expressed an interest in it but I haven't got to the point where I'm ready to get rid of it, yet.

I cant imagine touching off a couple 3.5" loads from a double gun?! The Gold 10 I had was a nice gentle shove and as somebody stated earlier hearing that action cycle and slam home with authority was like a Howitzer and used to give me goose bumps and a nervous laugh! :)

An 11.6 lb double gun is a joy to shoot goose loads from. 2-1/4 oz #4 lead gets your attention but it's still less than my 3.5" mossberg which fits just right

I need to have some work done to my sxs 10 ga for this season. A local business couldn't figure out how to ream barrels. Not sure if I'm going to have the barrels cut and threaded for tubes or just properly reamed

My chambers are 2 7/8" and being a true vintage gun with Damascus barrels I only shot low pressure smokeless or black powder rounds in it and tend to shoot my birds over decoys, no long range stuff for that old gun!

My AYA, in post #30, comes in at 9lb 9oz.

Cat, I had an old 10 SXS and loved it. I shot 2 7/8 #4 canucks and it was deadly! Had a couple of Spanish SxSs that were also fun to shoot & killed birds well. Had to move up, sold the doubles (mistake), & got a BPS. Sold that and got a Ithaca auto. Used that for years, It would sure reach with #4 or 2 lead. Sold because of health, could not pack or swing the weight. None were as much fun as the doubles. As a side note I shot a nice whitetail with a load of 00 out of one of the Spanish doubles :) . All fun enjoy. AJ
