As the title says, Who still Hunts with a 250 Savage? What is your favorite load?

Im going to be using my old savage model 99 in 250 Savage for deer hunting this year. It was my first rifle, my dad bought it for me when I was 9 years old. I havent shot a deer with it in 14 years and I figured its time to put it back to work. I loaded up some speer 100 grain boat tails today with 34.3 grains of IMR4064 and CCI BR2 primers. I managed to shoot a 5/8" group at 100 yards. I was pretty happy with this considering the rifle wears an old bushnell 4 power scope.

I had one on a mauser action just over 20 yrs ago, and I really regret trading it off. I know who has it so I haven't completely given up on getting it back some day. I shot a few deer with it, including the biggest buck I've ever seen on the hoof. That rifle was one of the reasons I got into handloading because I couldn't count on being able to find factory ammo for it. I loaded up with 100 & 115 gr. Nosler Partitions because I had a problem with Hornady's coming apart at close range.

Hope you have good luck with yours. I really miss that little calibre.

I recently picked up a Ruger Ultralight in 250 Savage. I had been looking for one for a couple years now, and knew about this one for some time. The fellow finally decided it was time to sell, so I grabbed it quick. This is a real nice, real light little gun which is good for my disc problems which act up carrying a heavy gun at times. I have not had the time to shoot it yet, but I understand it does shoot really well.

I used to shoot one in a m99, It was my first centerfire rifle. I never had a problem with recoil when I was a kid, I still have the gun but its worn out. I was thinking about getting another one or building one on a mauser action.

I ran the numbers and with equal sectional density bullets (85g in 243 vrs 100g in 250) in same weight rifles the 250 has about 1 ft LB less recoil and slightly slower recoil pulse. I compared top loads with each and starting loads with each, and it was always about 1 ft lbs difference which is about 10% less recoil. When viewed as a % it seems fairly significant.

How about muzzle blast and rise? Guessing the 250 would be less as it burns less powder at less pressure.

How do you guys find the recoil? Is it like a 243 or is it less? Might build one for my son on a Remington action, #1 bbl and McMillan compact stock, . It would be light.

Equal or less. Without 1 second of hesitation I would choose the .250 Savage. I have owned a couple in the past, but none at the moment. I shot whitetails and blacktails with mine, but would not hesitate to use it on larger game. The 100gr Hornady Sp is an excellent little bullet, and you can crank it up to ~3000fps with modern pressure loads. Keep in mind the factory and book loads are at the very low SAAMI pressure of 45,000 CUP (which is similar to a .22 Hornet and .30-30).

On the other hand, you can also work up some 115 or 120gr Partition loads to ~2700 fps, which would be fine for elk and moose.

Brass is easy to form from .22-250, although I found that case capacity (when using W-W brass) was a bit less than W-W .250 Savage brass. I wanted to try Lapua brass, but never got around to it.

Good job Harold, taking the youngster out! I have to say that the .250 Savage is my favourite small bore rifle.

The good thing with that gun for your son would the option to AI it down the road.

I have a Model Seven action here and a 25cal PacNor bbl enroute in Remington MR contour. I may go std chamber first and AI it later, or not.
