Who hunts with a Milsurp?

I mean non sporterized... Complete with the long barrel, the hand guards, and the military sights. And what have you shot with one? and how far? I have never hunted that way before, but I will be trying soon. I have used all fashions of sporterized militarys, but would love to hear about hunting with an unaltered one.
 
I haven't hunted with mine yet, but this fall I will be taking my Garand out for a retro day. My hunting partner will be carrying his SKS for that day, too. I also have an M38 Swede Mauser that I may take out for a day, it is such a nice handy, light rifle that it seems a shame not to take it into the field for some exercise.

I do. I use other things, too, like a muzzleloader to take advantage of the earlier season, but I have used my No.4 Mk2 with all its original wood and metal (and a scope on a no-gunsmithing mount) for hunting more than any other gun I own.
 
My first deer with an issue No5 Jungle Carbine... about 50 yards in brush.

Ammo was good old "Dominion" 303 in 180 grain round nose soft point. Now THAT was the expensive part. My Old Man said to grind off the tips of some Mk VII ammo ( he had lots of that) and I could use that to hunt with...all legal like.

Too bad you couldn't hit a flock of barn doors with it... at ANY range.

Funner than diarrhea, though.
 
I took a deer with my full wood m96/38 mauser, but it's had a scope mounted. It wasn't that difficult to drag it through the bush either.

I've taken a No5mk1 with me and carried it around in close brush during a moose hunt too, plain stock with no mods.
 
Jungle Carbine workes excellent in... jungle-like woodlands!

I hunt Moose on trails through standing trees with lots of brush, max 50 yard opening along the trails, with a 99.999% origional No5 Jungle Carbine with a handloaded 180Gr SPT Sierra. The Sierra handload is made to match the origional WWII ammo trajectories so the target sight on it shoots right on at 300 yards.

(I say the No5 is 99.999% origional because the front sight that came with it was way too high for the trajectory I was looking for, so I bought a functional but rusted front sight from a No4, removed the rust and shaved the sight down until the 300yard sight is right on.)

Hunting with Milsurps

Israeli Mauser (full Wood), Put a scope mount on today, After the first hole was drilled the rest didn't hurt as much! Last year with a M38 Nagant I missed,so that's why I going with a piece of glass on my mauser for deer this year.Every little bit helps !

I've hunted with my K98 in .308 (Israeli) in the past. The terrain was thick bush so the longest shot I've taken is probably 200m, which the irons were perfect for. The key I think with shooting with military irons is a lot of practice beforehand and really know the rifle. A lot of guys don't like the K98 leaf sights for fast acquisition but if you've worked with them a bit, you can acquire with them as fast as peep sights.
