Who hunts with single shots?

For the first 3 years of bird hunting, I used a CIL single shot 12 guage, full choke. I still think I did better with it than my auto, or my pump but it started opening all by itself from time to time after firing, so we decided to just keep it for nostalgia. I'd still be shooting it I think. Sure, it got tough when there were a lot of birds in the marsh, but I just learned to make my shots count a little more. And it certainly was easier to switch over to No.2's when the big geese started coming in.

Single Shot Hunting Rifle

I like the single shot rifles because you only have one round, so you make it count.
I have the choice of:

An H&R Trapdoor Officers Model 45-70.
Ruger No1 AB model in 7X57
Remington Rolling Block 7X57
Browning 78 6mm
H&R Model 1871, 38-55
Sharps 54
Witney Rolling Block 20 gage
Ballard 38
MkIII three band Snider 577
Martini 303
Pederosoli 50
Parker-Hale 45 & 58's
And a number of bolt actions in 223, 7mm08, 7X57, 308, 30-06, and 270.

I used a Thompson Center Encore in 300WM / 50cal ML / 25-06 for a long time as my main meat getter... it shot Moose, Deer, Bear and a pile of Varmints. I only sold after it after replacing it with an Encore Pro-Hunter Version with the Upgrades and longer barrels.
I hunt with a single shot more than any other action type... including my Semi Auto's.
I really get a charge out of the Semi-Auto pissing match thread... I think I'll go and fork some poo into the whirly gig.

I too hunt with a T/C Encore in 300WM, 209x50 muzzleloader barrel and a Pedersolli .50cal Frontier sidelock for all my biggame needs. Then I switch my Encore barrel to a .204Ruger fro varmints.

I have hunted for years with a s/s T/C Contender carbine chambered in 30/30 now rechambered to the wildcat 308 Bellm, 10mm, 22LR match chamber and a 45-70.

I also hunt with bolt, lever and semi-auto rifles... :)

YUP!!:D
But this year it will be my new to me( thanks hithere!) Tikka 412S in 9.3X74R.
I also have a set of 12 guage barrels with Briley 28 guage tubes for it.
Looking for a set of 6.5X57R barrels or there abouts.

You may have better luck looking for some in 7x57R or 7x65R, Cat.

Good to hone your skills

When hunting small game for most of my youth, 30 years ago or so, I used a single shot Cooey 16 or a single shot 410

When small game hunting, you need to make the first shot count because, you most likely will not get a second. It is a great way to hone your skills.

Robert

I use a custom Ruger #1 in .35 Whelen for whitetail & elk, and also fool around with a Merkel 7x57R / 16 ga combo gun. I like them both! Here's a pic of the Merkel and a buck from last year

That's a Merkel, Longwalker.
I saw a BRNO 12g/7x57R for sale just recently and was sad I didn't have the pocket for it.
Mind you, I'd be tempted to try getting it reamed to 7x65R.
Almost 280 Rem power and the same chamber pressure.

I have carried my No 1H Stainless in 375 H&H Mag with me for deer hunting last year. The year before I carried my T/C Ogea in .50 for part of the season also.

I have used a Ruger #1 light sporter in 7x57 and found it an excellent choice. I do not presently own one but if the right one comes up at the right price...

I got this years turkey with a single shot cooey 20ga. For big game I use a repeater. I know you only need one shot, and where I hunt you'd be lucky to get off a second shot (dense brush), but I feel more comfortable with a mag o' bullets. Besides, you never know when you'll get in a firefight with a deer. If I ever get past this phobia, the handy rifle in 45-70 will be in the collection.

only when i was a kid using my trusty old cooey hunting squirels.i have a muzzle loader today but no hunting with it yet.lots of upland game hunting with a single 16 gauge
