Hunting with single shots

The only rifles I hunt with are single shots. I hunt smaller Coastal Blacktail with a custom Ruger #3 with a semi bull barrel in 6 x 47. I also have a Stevens 044 1/2 in 25-35 Ack Imp. For larger game I use a custom Ruger #3 in 280 Rem and a Wincherster Highwall in 7 x 57 Ack Imp Rimmed. I have a Thompson Contender Carbine with barrels in 17 HMR, 9mm Luger and 28 Ga. All three of my hunting partners also use only single shot rifles.

In our group we say " If the rifle holds more than one round at a time it has a serious engineering fault.

I use an H&R 45-70 from time to time,the game seems to worry about that big bullet as they always hide when I pull it out........except forthat one stupid squirrel

I will be doing some hunting with a single shot shotgun. But if I had a single shot rifle I'd probably take that out once in awhile too.

I can appreciate that this thread in more geared for Rolling blocks, falling blocks, and various under-lever operated actions, but it don't get much more "single shot" than a muzzeloader

Oh, without doubt.
But the thing about using single shot cartridge rifles is that most if not all of the chambers are available in repeaters.
So when you choose to use a single shot in that cartridge you're committing yourself to making that cartridge work effectively the first time in much the same way that when you use a muzzle loader you make the decision that the power it produces is up to the task so long as you do your bit.
In both cases you're removing the safety net.
And THAT is the challenge.

BTW, the Sportco Martini Hornet I mentioned before has now become mine by the generosity of my friend.
He's giving it to me for services rendered even though I really didn't do anything special, just helped him clean out some stuff that would be difficult for him to do because of some permanent arm injuries.
He's a top guy.

My 9.3X74R top barrel printed 3 shots into .982 last evening, the recpoil ws not near as bad as I figured it would be.
Load was midrange, 50 grains of Varget and a 250 balistic tiip.
I think I'll quit looking for another set of barrels!
If I only use thhe top barrel,
and I still hunting with a single shot rifle this year?

Now just regulate those bbls!
I can forgive you for hunting with a double rifle though.
You don't have to work the action to fire the second shot so it's an honourary single shot.

The jack screw makes it easy fforr regulating the bottom barrel, but I have some paracticiing to do for a match next weekend, before messing with the O/U anymore!

I really don't understand why more manufacturers have not embraced the idea of switch barrel rifles.
TC and H&R/NEF are examples of companies that have made a real profit from it.
If Mauser and SwissArms and Merkel and others can make bolt rifles that switch so easily why aren't they more popular and cheaper?

I've hunted with my father's Ruger #1 in .375 H&H a couple of times, and he has hunted with it for 20 years. He totally abuses the poor thing; I mean using it as a push stick in two feet of muddy water when launching his boat, then shake the water off it and carry on, sends it to the gunsmith once per decade for cleaning and that's it. Totally reliable, despite making the rest of us cringe at what he does with it. Topped with a Leupold VXII 3-9 and I've seen him put moose down at 550 yards with one shot. Really an unbeleivable rifle.
