Who indexes barrels?!?

use a rubber mallet and smack the action wrench.it will come loose or if tightening it will index if it dosen't want to budge that last inch...
thats what i do.

If it's that hard to index, the correct procedure is to remove the barrel and turn back the torque shoulder in a lathe. Rule of thumb, m14 barrels should come hand tight at 15degrees(min) 20degrees(max) prior to using barrel vice and action wrench to index barrel. 80 to 90 footpounds is the required torque value

So if you are exceeding 80/90 footpounds to index your barrel..... The barrel needs the shoulder set back slightly.
On a side note, have never had to do the procedure other than when installing match barrels.

nope...its splined so unless you chop the barrel there is no other fix that I know of. You need an action wrench, barrel vice and a big ol cheater bar to do the job. Your gunsmith needs to eat his wheaties if he couldn't do it.

Wrench on that thing like ya got a pair!

Thomas, I will PM you regarding this issue.
Thx.

When Thomas was showing me how to do this in Port Alberni this french cop chick showed up and asked us what was up, we just told her we were playing around with guns in the mason lodge and she left, praise jahbalon

LOL that was a very interesting experience hehehe
Try that in a surrey parkin lot and we would have been front page on most major newspapers LOL

I wish I was outside at that point, haha thankfully tho mine didn't require the index

What size wrench is that? and is it modified in any way? Ineed to index mine too.

Done! the wrench I used was 1 5/8'' I found a 41mm that fit pretty good also, made a barrel vice out of some 1'' x 2'' flat bar with a 1.1'' hole. heres a pic of the vice I made incase someone wants to copy it. my sights are now upright and my feed ramps look better.

Bob was your barrel under indexed? Just needed a little more tighty? Good looking job on the vise.

Would any over indexing, require the torque shoulder to be rolled to obtain hand tight as per 45ACPs instruction?

Mine is over tightened(sight leans slightly left viewed from rear), and I was thinking a large Rigid pipe cutter from work, with the cutter substituted out for a roller, could roll the torque shoulder back if necessary. Seems I read that somewhere here maybe?

Yes, an overtightened barrel will most likely require recreating the torque shoulder. A roll swage set up on a lathe is the optimum way to go but your idea with the pipe cutter and roller set up could do the job as well. If you are very patient and very precise, it can also be very carefully done on an anvil.

Mine was over indexed after removeing barrel I just lightly peened the shoulder back took @100lbs to tighten to index. I hope to try her out this weekend.

hey m14 experts. I have shot a buddies m14 a few years ago, but havent seen one since. I am being offered one for sale now, but the rear sight has me worried:

2007 model. do you guys think indexing is off? or what else could problem be? seller mentions that all his rifles have the sight to the left, but this seems extreme. Dont want to pick up a lemon!
