Hi,
All I want to know is, who invited these two idiots to the party? Meaning the two shots in the yellow circles...

10 shot groups, at 50 yards from a bench.

This may not go well. Another new member ( 13 posts ) with hardly any attitude. Oh well. Welcome to the forums Marlin. There is room for all here. Good luck !

Triggerman,
Do you mean I don't seem to have a crappy attitude? Just checking to make sure I understand you...

Cheers,

There's a strong tendency here not to actually comprehend what was posted by new members, and either take apart what they didn't say, or simply label them as agents of "the other side". Paranoia runs deep. Ignore it. Back on topic, I've had those a**holes show up at my range too - I think they're professional party crashers, sort of like a politician at a shopping mall, they're there to test your patience.

Sorry about that.... As I tried to change the title, I created a duplicate post.

Operator error - malfunction between my ears.:p

happens to the best of us. To answer your question there are several things that may have invited those uninvited guests. If they arrived late in the party my guess would be your barrel is getting hot.

I've noticed that. Although, I do expect some level of noise in an internet forum. While it can be annoying, I don't let it get to me.

Pro party crashers... Most definitely. Even the tightest security - good ammo, good rifle, and good shooter - may not stop them!

Quite possibly... I'm not sure at what point in each group the flier happened.

A year had elapsed since I last was at the range... I feel the fliers were most likely my fault.

I'll just have to go back to the range and practice some more... Poor me!

I know what you mean. Happens to all of us. But the more you shoot, the more excuses you can come up with.

Sun was in my eyes on that one.
Guy next to me shot off a ported .50BMG.
Mosquito bit me.
Saw a gopher over there.
Wind really picked up.
Bad ammo.
Sight must be loose.

When I read the post I thought he was just joking about a couple of fliers. Which I think he was.
I am sure we all have looked at a target and said "I don't know what happened there".
Unless there is some history to the post that I am not aware of, I just take it as that.

I was at the range yesterday and had the old "how many shots in a group" debate with a precision shooter/handloader. He hates it when people shoot 3 or 5 shot groups and brag about how great their gun/ammo/skill is. He said minimum 10 shots for a group, and ideally 20. Never more than 30.

I always pipe in "what are you shooting for"? If all shots are within 6" or 8" circle, it's probably a dead deer/moose/bear/elk. If all shots are within 2" it's probably a dead rabbit or squirrel.

If your goal is to see how well your handloads are for precision shooting, 10? 15? 20? shots with a barrel cooldown in between.

But at the end of the day, it's whatever you want, as it's your gun & ammo.

YMMV

You're right - I am talking about the fliers.

I'm shooting to improve accuracy and consistency. One reason is that I find it a fun challenge... the second is so that I can hunt ethically.. and the third is that I find my range time to be relaxing and a good way to refresh my mind - even when I shoot like crap!
