Who is going Elephant Hunting

Here's a pic of me with Mark Sullivan's Charles Osborn .577 NE. I wasn't overwhelmed by the expensive doubles. This one would go for close to $100K, but if I had to carry a rifle for general shooting in Africa or North America I wouldn't trade a beat up Lee Enfield that would print 4 MOA for that club. He seemed to be able to make it work though.

There was a 28 day safari for "The Big Four" on Ebay a few weeks ago (Lion, Leopard,Cape Buff, & ELEPHANT). It had a Buy It Now of 65k. That did not include airfair, trophy fees, or tips. Didn't think it was too bad for a one month hunt considering an Alberta Bighorn runs 20k for 10 days. The more I watch of safari hunting, the more it interests me. It is not at all a given....just shoot off the land rover.....type deal by any means. The old saying of "One mile walked for every pound of ivory" about says it. Lot's and lot's of walking, failed stalks, tracks that don't end, and all of the things seen along the way...... Well if I can ever pick the other 5 winning numbers....Count Me In ! Andif that ever happens, I'm sure my .378 Weatherby will be up to th task of putting one of those big tuskers in park ! Maybe even a charging Hippo (is there a thread on charging hippo's?).

Anybody ever taken an Elephant with archery tackle? Just curious not something I want to try....

Fred Bear was credited as the first to do it in modern times, though I'm sure there were many both before and since? After all,man has been hunting with pointy sticks for over 100 centuries and bows/arrows for at least half that long. Some African nations have outlawed bowhunting, and some PHs just won't take bowhunters regardless for dangerous game.I beleive even South Africa has jumped on the anti-bow wagon recently?

I remember seeing I guess it was Fred Bear killing an elephant with a bow, on the tv. The elephant was not terribly big and was standing under a tree broadside. He fired an arrow just behind the front leg and nothing happened. He fired a second arrow same spot about 6" away from the first and nothing happened. He was just about to release the third arrow when the elephant fell down dead. Both arrows went in as far as the fletching which you could see on the outside of the elephant.

cheers mooncoon
