Who is scoping their Marlin 336?

Just found this pic of my 35Rem marauder when it was wearing that same base/scope combo I already mentioned above in this thread. You can see the base extends slightly over the barrel and where I dremeled in the extra slot for the rear ring - to move it forward.

That is one GREAT idea! I'll be trying that for sure!

I have my 35 Rem with the XS ghost sight - it works great to about 100 yds. My eyes are not so good either, and the conventional iron sights are almost useless to me.

The low power scope was nice, but running through the bush after cats can get the scope all messed up, and the levers were built for no scope.

But, I do have a red dot on my Marlin 444. Only cause I may use that one further out. Makes little sense, I know.

The ghost rings on my Marlin 45/70 work well out to 100 but I have been debating dropping the cash for an EOtech or something or that sort.

But I bought it for the bush so I mostlikely will not.

My 2cents.

As H4831 already mentioned, a small 2.5x fixed is hard to beat. Leupold make a lightweight one in their FX-II series (4.9" eyerelief) as did Weaver not long ago. Get a scope with lots of eye relief and mount it as far forward and as low as possible. I groove another cross slot with a dremel in an aluminum Weaver one piece base so the rear ring can be mounted forward (see pic with a Simmons 2.5x with 5"+ eyerelief). Get the base that extends out over the barrel. Weaver low rings are quite low. If enough eye relief permits, you don't need a hammer spur which I like alot (see pic). I find "see through" rings way too high.

Good advice on the eye relief. On my Marlin 444S I have a Bushnell Scope Chief VI 1.5 - 4.5 and use a set of Weaver pivot scope mounts that allow quick access to the open sights if required. I'm mainly using Hornady 265gr FP handloads and the eye relief doesn't seem to be a problem or at least hasn't so far.

On my Marlin 1895GS, I have basically the same set up except the scope is a Leupold Vari-X II, 1 - 4. There, with the heavier bullets and hotter loads, eye relief could easily become an issue. It's not too bad testing loads and target shooting from a bench but for general hunting I'll either have to get a scope with more eye relief or take the scope off period.

I have an FX-II 2.5x28mm IER Scout with quick release rings on my Guide Gun. Plus Williams FPs when I don't want to use the scope.

Looks good ET. I like the scope set up but also the lever and the 'leather'. Looks good. I came across an iron sight option that looks interesting.

Have you seen this and if so, what are your thoughts on it?

ET - I'm normally not a fan of long eye-relief/scout scope set-ups on rifles but that one you have on your Marlin looks great.

NAA.

Yes I've seen it and I think I even have one rattling around in a drawer someplace...I was looking for it the other day. The only problem is the scope rail I have mounts in the rear dovetail so I can't use the ORH sight on my Guide Gun anymore.

As far as the sight itself goes I think it's a decent simple option if you want to swap your buckhorn for an aperture.

I installed on my Marlin 1895GS 454-70 2 piece Warne scope bases and attach the scope with Leupold QRW quick detachable rings.

I have tried several scope on this rifle a Burris 1X EER scope, Leupold Vari X 11 1-4X, a Leupold VX11 2-7X compact and a Burris 3-9 ballistic plex Mini Mag.

I by far prefer the 2-7X scope and when I don't have a scope on I mount a XS Sights low Weaver backup ghost ring sight onto the rear scope base.

i scoped mine but it just felt too heavy and lost all of it's practicality as a short range hunting rifle. i only use it under 100 yds and i can get a 6" group resting against a tree at 100 with irons compared to a 2.5" group from the same stance with a scope. big whoop! took it of and like it wayy better, the feel of my hand around the reciever is so natural. if you can see and shoot well with irons dont bother. it's not a long range shooter and scoping is not cheap for little practical benefit on this gun.
