Who is the OLDEST Black Badge still active?

Hmm, good question.. I happen to know who 0006 is... he doesn't shoot anymore I think... I could be wrong though

ONT...PM me, I'm curious as to who you are... not in a bad way... I like knowing who the plank-owners were. I think it is important and I always respect those who have forged something! I love IPSC and some of my best mates have come from IPSC!

Old but NOT That old!
IPSC numbers are issue Prov.Year,Member # that year
ONT(prov) 00 (2000) 01 (1st member that year)
I really wanted to wait for Ont0007.
I know a BB member who was part of the founding fathers here in Canada and I think they were using flintlocks when he started.(Den you out there?)
I've been out of it for a bit. Legs and for that matter the rest of the body let go but remember we had a fellow in his 80's still shooting.
A discussion at dinner was about what competitive shooting sport would have the oldest active shooter.Benchrest came to mind but I remember some fellows in IPSC
who had some years behind them.
For that matter even TR and F Class has a few senior seniors.
Would love to hear of some Centurian still pulling triggers even just for entertainment.

Does this mean anyone with a higher badge number has to be all deferential and polite to the earlier entries? Hopefully, this isn't going to be like MEC where you are judged by your commitedness on an impossibly arbitrary scale.

The oldest in Ontario actually start not with ON, but with OHA, and at least one still shoots at Sharon.

The First and Original 001 Black Badge

The very first black badge in Ontario #001, not sure what year it was, is still very active in IDPA and is living in Orlando Florida.

I competed with him at the World Shoot in 1984 in Virginia and 1986 in Orlando.

You will find him as 'Scouse' in Glock Talk.

He wouldn't happen to have a paper bouquet waiting for his return to Canada would he??

So the most senior Canadian IPSC shooter has settled into a Glock, eh?

oldest in terms of age? or in terms of lenth of time as a black badge holder?
My dad is 70 and he still comes out to IPSC shoots whenever he can.

As far as age goes, Barney is 80 something (86?) and shoots every week at BRRC as well as at all of their Level 2's, the Triangle L3 and the Provincials. He's also an active CRO.

I would guess Murray G would be close to, if not the first BB holder in Canada. but maybe not. I think him and Randy are the longest particpating people in the sport in Canada though

Hmmm... Yep - MG brought the sport to Canada in '77, and was a major part of the black badge creation. Knowing Murray, he probably did take it from himself - so you're probably right. :)

Credits in the orginal BB manual listed Lorne R, Murray G. Calvin M. Nick A. (The pres) and a few others that I'm sorry but I have probably missed.

Big Kudos to Barney in ON for still being in "the game". I think our oldest current NS shooter is in his very high sixties. (Joseph) He's an Open shooter with a wicked doubletap.

My BB is 1990, even tho I finished it in December of 1989. Would have been sooner had I found out about the game beforehand.:(

oldest bb

In Ontario, the first issued BB is DVC 1 and that of course is MH. He was one of the original 4 instructors on the first Ont BB course. (which I had the privelege on being on) He came up with the idea of the BB back then. He had the the badges made up and I remember the other 3 instructors had to fight over who got 2,3 and 4. This was pre OHA. OHA then took over issuing the BB number and then IPSC Ontario took over from them...

He is still an active shooter but as others have said more IDPA now than IPSC but we have shot the Glock GSSF match in Orlando for the last few years

By age in Ontario ( and maybe even Canada) Barney has to be the oldest active competitor ( I believe he is 88 now) - at least this is what I remember him telling me at the WCRA level II in May)

Well folks, I think that qualifies as the last word on the subject.

Thanks Dennis!

This is a cool history lesson! So if MH was #1, who where the other three? I found the old Black Badge Manual and it doesn't give any credit to MH. There are Ontario folks there - I wonder why not?

And just to confirm I have it right, MH is the guy that can't come back to Canada because of that bulls**t by Miller in Toronto regarding storage crap, right?

Well Sean the memory banks are still working a little.

The other three instructors were George Hausner (now deceased I believe), Brian Hoare ( who is now in BC the last I heard) and Bob MacIntosh (who is now back in England)

At that time holster sports were not approved by OHA and Vince Gaudino who at the time was an OHA director took the first course and was impressed and made a recommendation presentation to the OHA BOD who subsequently then recoginized practical shooting.

When I took the course there wasn't a BB instructors manual. Just a qualification check list drawn up by the 4 instructors. It was pretty similar to the one still used up until recently.. (although I remember shooting prone at 50 yards for the first time was very humbling ...... and the distances were shortened thereafter)

It was several years after that, a proper instructors manual was pulled together with input from a lot of sources. My memory is Cal Martin was the one who went to the effort of pulling together the first Ont instructors manual putting into hard copy a lot of pertinent training info augmented additionally by courses he had been to at gunsite etc. I just checked my archives.... I have a bound copy of an IPSC Ontario Practical Pistol Instructors manual dated April 6, 1986 with Cal Martins name as credit on the first page. I would have guessed it was 1985 when it was put together but this might have been a revised one.

Yes you have the correct MH but I think it may be more a case of why would he want to come back..... Life is pretty good in Orlando.....LOL

I think Barney is the oldest active, but when Paul Ko did his black badge course I think he was pushing 90. Canuck might remember....
