Who is up for another "follow along" Garand build?

Okay, the plan is another.308 build from the ground up but with a few twists. The wife ordered me a new pull through reamer for fathers day (SCORE!)
So it will include cutting a match chamber in new barrel and finish with a range session uploaded to YouTube.

if you are a very patient man to track down parts, can properly headspace the barrel and pay lots of shipping for small parts, and have the barrel vise /action block.

Depends what you are after in the garand?

I don't really think it would be cheaper to build...
 
Okay I have gathered all the parts except one. Once that arrives I will go over the build showing all the parts in detail. My new chamber reamer is on its way, so we will cover that as well, cutting the chamber in a new 308 barrel.

This rifle is going to be finished in black oxide instead of the normal parkerizing. The stock will be pepper laminate as this one is going to be a range/bush Garand.

OK, a pimped out Garand to make J.C. Garand proud:cheers:.
One of my future projects will be a "grunge Garand":redface: built on a cosmetically nasty, but servicable, Springfield receiver. I'll use up some grade 2 parts which are servicable, but pitted in non-critical areas, and a somewhat worn barrel to build this one. I'm thinking it might become my "cat/bear defence Garand" to alternate with the M870 Rem shotgun which I carry when doing crop damage claims on remote fields. I'm not looking for MOA accuracy out of this one, just reliable functioning with Sierra 165gr HPBT bullets. My big concern is if there are some Nazi or Jap bears out there who know to listen for the "pling" of an ejected clip before making their final chargeLaugh2.
 
Yes a grunge Garand would be fun using grade B or C parts. I have some stock sets that are rough and some grade B parts and barrels, I just need to find a grunge receiver. I had some but sold them off arrggghh!!!

Purple we should do a couple of grunge builds as a thread pictorial!:)
 
Ok, I'm in. A want to convert my shootin iron to a .308. What do you think of the kreiger barrels? And where can you get a headspace gauge? After years of M1a playing I'm going back to the Garand.
 
Krieger barrels are great. So are Criterion, I have used both. I have the headspace gauges coming from brownells. I finally caved and started picking up my own tools. I am waiting for the bolt to arrive then a very detailed build pictorial starts right away. My goal is to go from a bucket of parts to shooting at the range in 5 days.
 
Shawn, I'll be curious to hear how the Criterion barrel lines up on your receiver at the initial hand tight position. I have a new one, which I haven't installed yet, that lines up from 23 to 30 degrees off index on 15 different receivers. I like a new barrel to start around 10-20 degrees off index before tightening. I spoke to Criterion on this and they felt that 23 degrees of offset would work w/o having to face off the barrel shoulder.
