Who is up for another "follow along" Garand build?

Krieger barrels are great. So are Criterion, I have used both. I have the headspace gauges coming from brownells. I finally caved and started picking up my own tools. I am waiting for the bolt to arrive then a very detailed build pictorial starts right away. My goal is to go from a bucket of parts to shooting at the range in 5 days.

Feel free to send it out here for, uh, independent review... ;)

I can spin it on and snap a pic for you. Sound good?

Shawn, I'll be curious to hear how the Criterion barrel lines up on your receiver at the initial hand tight position. I have a new one, which I haven't installed yet, that lines up from 23 to 30 degrees off index on 15 different receivers. I like a new barrel to start around 10-20 degrees off index before tightening. I spoke to Criterion on this and they felt that 23 degrees of offset would work w/o having to face off the barrel shoulder.

It's tough to determine the degree of offset by eyeballing it, but a pic would be interesting. I like to use a dial type angle finder on the levelling fixture which clamps on the front sight base on the gas cyl and the fixture that sits on the flat between the rear sight "ears". A dial angle finder with a magnetic base is very handy for barrel installs. I use it when re-barrelling M1903 Springfields and M1 Carbines as well. It's a very useful go/no-go indicator when matching barrels to receivers.

Me too!:D I now use a dual mag level system for timing barrels. Here are some pics. You will notice 27ish degrees. I have spun these on without any shoulder work.

The receiver is just hand snug in the pics. I did not take the time to zero the barrel in the pics so could be out a few degrees. I will not spin it on until the metal finish is complete.

How about another Tribute Build, just like the Bob (Band of Brothers) M1 you did,
but this one will be engraved on the sides of the M1 receiver with this inscription:

"A Tribute to the $99.00 M1 Garands of 1995-2000 at the Calgary Gunshow and in the ads of the Gunrunner"

Lol - that gets my vote. Since '06 brass started getting pricey though, I've gravitated more to the M1903 and haven't lost an empty since :)

Waiting for one more part and my new 308 chamber headspace gauges to arrive, then away we go.

I will start media blasting the parts this weekend, then finish ream the chamber, and then send the whole works to the black oxide guy for final a deep matt black finish. The black should look great against the pepper laminate stock set. The receiver for this project is a Breda 60.00 special!!

After this one, I am starting on a Winchester restoration and a SA 308 build. The SA receiver is a 1941 dated rescued from the grave as a pitted stripped junk receiver, now all welded up and in the que.

Lots of better pics to follow, just a quick snap for now.

Some more progress tonight:

Installing and timing the barrel and cutting (finishing reaming) the chamber on the 308 barrel.

Mount the barrel in the vice and zero it into position.

Wrench the receiver into position bringing the receiver and barrel into harmony.:D

Now take it all apart again blast the whole works clean, then it's off to the black oxide guy. Stay tuned!!!

Wow! Sweet looking shooter there!

Looks like an NM rear apperture hood...got any details for us?

Stock by Boyds? Did it require fitting?

Sure!

Breda receiver
Breda bolt
Breda oprod
Breda trigger group
Criterion .308 barrel
Boyd's pepper laminate stock set
BM59 rear sight set with NM rear sight aperture
Stock metal is US made reproduction stuff including butt plate
My own M1 Army adjustable gas system will be installed as well

The final finish will be a deep mat black oxide finish, more pics soon.

I ground a couple of flats on the end of my pull through reamer rod so that I am able to use a T-handle tap wrench to turn it. This, as well as wrapping some tape around the rod below the muzzle, helps to keep the reamer rod centered as you turn it. Also, the OAL of the set-up with the T-handle tap wrench lets you turn it with one hand while keeping light thumb pressure on the bolt with the other hand while cutting.

Tell us that the "Red Baron" isn't being used as a cutting fluid.:p

That's funny, I was thinking about a tap wrench to turn it. I have always used a adjustable or small vice grips. I will pick up one up for next time. The tape trick around the rod also works very well to keep the the rod centered in the muzzle area.

The best advise I can give is take your time when cutting, taking very small amounts of meat away with each rotation. It is very easy to cut a step into the chamber if you are not careful.

The only stock fitting was a little around the trigger group area. These laminate stocks are sold as fitted units, so they usually fit close the first time.
