I just bought a brand new in the box Ruger Mk III. It's the second handgun I've purchased new, the rest being on consignment in stores or here on EE.

I'm just curious to know how many of you keep the original boxes? I have boxes for some of the used handguns I've bought, but they're starting to take up a bit of space. I could see keeping the box for more collector grade guns, but these are just plain shooters.

Do most people keep the original box, and does it add anything to resale down the road? Is there any other advantage to keeping the box?

Keep The Box & Papers...

I always keep the boxes & tags from all new gun purchases. And hope to get them with used gun purchases. In the collecting world there usually is a premium paid for guns with original boxes/papers. In some cases the boxes themselves become collectible. But I suppose that is premised on the fact that the majority of people seem to have recyled boxes over the years & on the older guns they are now scarce. There seems to be a universal appeal when selling a gun to say it's in mint condition with the original box & papers... ;)

I keep everything too, just put it on the shelf in my closet. I recently bought a colt delta elite & it was nice that it came with the original box & papers. In reality they mean nothing to me but nice to have.

every thing i buy i keep the box and papers for. (not that i can always find them though...)
its a habit i picked up from my dad. he did it so that if any thing broke he could take it back under warenty.

Why do I need the boxes when I have nice padded carry cases that are far better!
The original boxes take up way too much space and collect dust.
I'm the type of guy that only keeps what he uses/needs.

Each to their own, but i will pay an extra buck or two for an item, whether it's a gun or not, if it has the box. It gives the conveyance that the item was cherished, well taken care of.
I had the box for my Xbox i sold recently, the manual, all the plastic bags that went around all the parts.
The buyer was impressed, he said he felt he was getting a brand new item
(It was 2+yrs old, i'd had it apart several times........)

It depends... I've kept the box for the SP-01 I bought.. for the Stoeger shotgun, I tossed it (once assembled, it won't fit again anyway).

I have kept all my handgun boxes as they are usually a carrying case and it is nice to have if I sell the gun. I bought a Ruger 10/22 and it came in a cardboard box, that got tossed.

I've kept all my handgun cases, but i think that runs in the family, as the High Standard I inherited from my grandfather came with the original box as well. My father has the original box his first gen M-39 S&W came in, including the oil paper last time i looked. :D :D

sometimes there's a premium if the box is there too- and a lot ofthe manufacturers are using a poly box now - it used to be it just came in a cardboard box- my 70 series was just a cardboard box, dumped inside- 10 years later it had a styrofoam fitting- same series, just 10 years later manufacture- i just got a new ruger and the whole thing has a quality plastic box- plus it's a place to keep the extra grips, and other doo-dads you acquire over the years as you replace the factory parts with aftermarket -

It may be taking up space for some, but its nice to have everything complete for future reference.. And the fact that i just saw a Ruger Blackhawk box circa 1957 in good condition sell for over $800US makes u think:eek: ....Some people are willing to pay for just about anything...Not uncommon to see boxes alone go for US$20+...Yikes
Cheers
dB:)

Absolutely I keep the boxes. Same reason as said, what if you sell them?

Nah. Who the hell am I kidding. I keep the boxes largely because I am a pack rat.
