Who knows about ATVs?

do not get a kock-A-sucky AKA kawasaki they are the best price BUT they have the worst ride, they break, and they are a ##### to work on.
the Yamaha are the best.

I have a 03 Grizz although I don't ride it much most of the year it does go through its paces come hunting season. This bike only has about 1100 kms on it but it has been very reliable thus far, it has no problem starting in cold weather.
It easily pulls whole moose out of the bush, 2 years ago I pulled two pretty big cow elk out of the bush at the same time without any issue. With the weight issue, the Grizz is not too heavy that one wouldn't be able to manipulate it if stuck, I lift either end of it while the GF puts milk crates under the tires so I can work on it. It rides like a Cadillac on most terrain and the Diff Lock has saved me from certain problems while haulling moose out of the bush.

The Grizz gets my biased vote!

I posted this response in a different thread about ATVs.

Bombardier. They have the best ATV on the market. They are well built, and they work great with superior power and torque.

Why arent they as popular? They havent been around as long and they have not built up a name yet. You all know that Ski-Doo owns over half the market share of snowmobile sales. Cat, poo and yami all fight over the rest. Bombi will eventually make it the same with their ATVs.

I have driven the Outlander 800 on a few occasions now. There is NO comparison. Nothing. Don't even try to argue this. If you do, you have not driven one. This is a 4x4 utility quad, flip it into 2x4 and you can walk it on the rear wheels for a few hundred yards, no problem. Flip it back into 4x4 and it simply out hauls anything. Torque is always at hand.

IMO the stupidest thing they ever did was discontinue the Traxter model. It looked like hell, but it was built like a bulldozer. 500 CC of pure enjoyment. I have yet to see a 660 Griz outpull one. Thats me on my friends 500 CC Traxter Max. He owned a 660 Griz before this machine. He broke two ribs when he rolled his griz ontop of himself. The Traxter is heavier, has a lower center of gravity and a much better gearbox. The torque is amazing on these bikes, like I said, never seen anything 650 or lower outpull this 500. Countless times I have seen at our huntcamp where one of our guys gets stuck so my dad will drive in behind him, push him out of a hole and carry on. Honestly, best ATV's ever.

I have also already driven the new 650 Outlander. Holy crap... Its like the 800 with a little less top speed.

Name one thing the Yami has that the Outlander does not.

A reliable tranny / 4 x 4 system.

Been reading a ton on the quad discussion board about Bombardier soft drivetrain and ####ty customer service.

Who knows maybe its just a few loud mouths on the boards, but I think Bomby has a bit of catch up to do....

Right now I own a 2004.5 Polaris 500 HO. I've owned 3 polaris quads, 2- 700's and the 500. All have been good quads that have great suspension and 4x4 locking, strong engines, brakes that stop on a dime, great shift lever for plowing.
IMG_0126.jpg

Now that said the draw backs are that they are too heavy, lack of 2 brake levers for really technical riding and I don't like the clutch engagement until you get up to the 800cc models.

If I was to buy another quad right now I would rule out the Bomardier 800 only because of the price.
The 700 King Quad gets my vote, awesome on fuel, great power, light weight, locking front diff, independant suspension, electronic fuel injection, brakes arn't too bad, tires do suck ass though but as do most factory tires. As mentioned the front plastic lacks any protection so a bush bumper is a must or you'll be breaking it to pieces in the bush.
Plus its competatively priced

Brambles

I've been calling all around town, and cannot find any more '05 Kodiak 450's..... so it looks like I'll be going with an '06.

Prices all seem to end up being pretty close out the door, so I'll likely pick on my local dealer up north.

I was very tempted by Honda, but their GC is very short. Like the EFI though!

Most others (Bomb, Polaris) were too heavy, with a straight axel, or for one reason or another didn't seem to "speak" to me.

The independent rear, 2/4/locking diffs, engine brakes, reliability record, multitude of aftermarket accessories, and a very good snowplow rig sold me.

We're quickly running out of snow where I am... I gotta get something else to ride!

Thanks for all the replies,

but don't stop posting pics of you travels, I love seeing them!

Brambles; Curious why you made this statment "Now that said the draw backs are that they are too heavy, lack of 2 brake levers for really technical riding "

Personally the only place I see a need for individual brakes is when sport riding. I wish my Grizz had the single lever brakes my Bomb has :)
You must consider when riding in serious conditions your in 4wd anyway & if you use front or rear brakes individually your actually using all 4 anyway because the drivetrain has directly conected front and rear!

I've been looking pretty seriously at getting a quad. I've pretty much settled on Yamaha over Honda for two reasons. Yamaha has front lockers and disc brakes. Honda does not. Yamaha is also a little cheaper and will fit better in my truck.

Now that I have narrowed down the style of helmet I think I need, this Nolan looks like a good idea.
To me it's a compromise between a full on face shield and a half cruiser. Should be good for glasses wearers, and has a clear shield and a smoked sun visor as well. (Cool!)
This would give me an option between my full closed snowmobile helmet and a half-helmet.

But I need some reviews, if you own one or have looked at one. I can only order it over the 'net.

Lots of questions! Web sites are unclear

- How does the clear shield move up and down... is there a lever, or do you just grab the shield with your fingers? Does it just go inside the helmet somehow?

- The dark shield moves independently, but looks obvious that it moves over the top of the helmet.

- Do the shields come off easily if you just want an open face? (Can you leave one or the other shield on)?

I love this site!

Thanks for the help.

I know what you mean.... I have given up on skidoo's (snowmobiles) this year. Sold them Both and probably won't be going back to them for quite a while... They are fun as hell (ripping down the lake +180KM/H) but we just don't get long seasons where Im from.

(V-force II, BB, Tune Pipe, 196 pin kit, clutch kit, oversized, and the list goes on, and on, and on, and on...)

Well, that's not exactly what I meant ....

I am not selling my snowmobiles, as we get snow on the ground for at least 5 months up at my cabin....

But we are almost done for this year, so I gotta get an ATV so I can keep getting out there!

When I went looking to buy an ATV I narrowed it down to Yamaha or Honda and I ended up buying a Honda 400. It has been a sweet machine, so far. I have a winch on mine and it really helps mind you a come-along will do just as good if a budget was tight.

This just came to mind and I have not read all the posts so this may have already been said, Popcan, if you can get them to throw hand warmers and thumb warmer into the deal it is a real assett in the winter time.

Good call walks a-lot;) Got 'em on 3 out of 4 of my snowmobiles, and funny no one wants to ride the one without, when it's -20....

If you want a serious down to business go anywhere do anything ATV, the kodiak is the king! I have a Grizz, but the lighter weight and slightly smaller size of the kodiak, makes it a joy to take in the woods.
