Who knows about ATVs?

Whatever you do, DO NOT BUY A POLARIS BELT BURNER!

Well you got the first part right, "Whatever". Blah, Blah, Blah. 2000 miles on my '02 500 HO and still original belt. I've pushed a whack of snow, pulled a truck, been through mud up to the seat, been in water up to the seat, pulled a 16 foot tandem trailer with a load of firewood, and a load of square bales. Same belt. It's all how you drive it bud, not the make or model. My 06 500 EFI is on the way.

Dam does this mean I'llhave to take the truck to Haggisfest and show you that the Honda's are better :D

I was hoping to go a little more fuel effecient this year with the beater

Hey, honda's are fine for you flatlanders, you don't need more than the 4 inches of clearance they got, and there's no bumps anywhere, so you don't need the independant rear eithe!

Good on ya! When I move to Alberta, I'll get a Honda just like you!

Thats right too much flat smooth ground here :) oh and puney little trees too.

Good thing I have that 25-06 and 7mm Mag to take those looooong shots because there is just no cover to hide from yotes and deer. :) got to shoot them from miles away.

I'm going to buy one of those 82mm morters from marstar get it reactivated and mount it to my quad for longer shots on deer herds :)

No ground clearance thats why you get a good winch (or a big strong wench)

My recommendation is to stay away from the behemoth ATV's. Trust me on this because when it comes to trail riding you have a dissadvantage.

I would go with the Honda 300cc full time 4X4
They are a baeauitiful little machine, reliable solid axle and cheap.

one of the last Outdoor Canada magazines I read gave some pretty good reviews for the Bombardier ATV's...

Just picked up an Outlander 400HO on Saturday, will report back when I get to know it a bit better.

Couldn't agree more.

My 91 300 is bulletproof (really tired but bulletproof)

Olny problem is Honda stopped making a 300 a few years back and in this day and age with the quad technology, there's no reason to have to fight the front end of a full time 4 x 4. No matter what he size, every 4 x 4 shold have a 2 to 4 wd switch.

I just picked up my JD trail buck 650 last week and i am loving it so far and ive been on it almost every hour ive been awake. It is a Bombardier traxter with a different name plate

Ive been riding a kodiak 400 for 4 years previously and enjoyed it but this is a whole new catagory. good range, unlimited power and unstoppable and not a bad price tag. have to wait and see about reliability but im not too worried about bombardier and rotax power. time will tell

I have put my 2003 kodiak 450 through hell, and at no time it has given up on me. I would not hesitate to buy another one. the engine is bullet proof.

CONS
- ####ty plastic floorborads. trim down the outside of them so they are flush. I have had both of mine torn/ripped.
- not the most clearence but sufficient
- plastic skid plate. replace this ASAP
-Plastic CV Boot guards.-junk
- plastic panelling eveywheres. makes it a ##### to work on yourself
-powder coated racks will rub easily and the paint comes off (minor frustration)
- look into the price of an oil filter! more than the price of your trucks oil filter!

PROs

-The locker is awesome
-They now have the rev limiter override
-now have IRS
-Liquid cooled
-throw some 25x12 bearclaws on the rear and 10x12 bearclaws on the front and you will go 99% of the places a stock grizzly will.
- lighter than the grizzly/polaris/suzuki/Krapysaki/bombardier top of the line machines.
- I am 6'2, 210 and can throw the machine around easily when riding
- (I remember when a 400 was the top of the line machine. Why do they have to be so big now???? I dont get it ,and you wont convince me to buy one so dont even try)
- good cold weather starting (-20 celsius to -30 celsius)
- comes with a free winch
- lots of aftermarket accesories (did i mention that the plastic skidplate is crap? they have steel and aluminum boot guards as well)

well there you have it. now you can jump all over my reply and criticize it. after all this is gunnutz....

& ride worse than a lumber wagon with no springs! :(
Great little machine but gotta question your experience if recommending one for any trail ride longer than about a mile
My "behemoth " Grizzly is 10 times the bike my old Honda's ever were:)
"Trust me on this" :) Your Honda can go NO-WHERE my Griz can't
& "Trust me on this" :D my Grizz with 3-4" more GC & TRUE 4wd WILL go many place you will be pushing & pulling your Honda thru:)

I think rifle chair actually made some good points.

Pre- locking differentials, the honda 300 4x4 was a shiner. If i found a good used one and the funds were readily available I would definately pick one up.

heres something to consider.

how many deer/moose have been hauled out of the bush with trikes before the quads and their big 500's, 600's,800's and inevitable 1000's?

It makes me laugh when people talk about the handling of quads. No matter how bad you think it may be, you could always be riding a trike. you ride a trike and drive a quad!

which leads me to another point, Just buy a jeep or suzuki sidekick! (heater, A/C, 4x4, winch, sleep in it, could pull a trailer for your moose/deer, put on oversized tires, used ones are close to the same price a new quad, if not less! the list goes on)

Jeeps are just plain to big for the narrower trails.
If your going back in the "old days" then again the Suz King Quads rode better & had a locking front diff, with a fast simple mod could be made to use diff lock in Low range which made them much more versitile.

But then who wants to live in the old days?? been there!! don't want to go back :D

Ah, thats why you have the trailer to haul your trike and pull the moose out of the bush!:D LOL

You meant high range right?;)

NO I meant Low range ;)

King Quadshave a cross bar in the shifter mechanism that keeps you from being able to use "Diff lock" in anything but Super Low Range. It's a quick & easy to pull the cross shaft bar to enable you to also use "Diff Lock" in Low Range & High Range.

Most King Quad uses have little use for "Diff Lock" because with-out this mod it's ridiculiously slow in Super Low!
