I have a target rifle in .308 built around an old Royal action (controlled-feed with a claw extractor). This was actually my first real competition rifle. I bought it used and it already had a lengthy history before it came into my hands. It has a thumbhole stock and feels very comfortable to me. Here is fairly typical 200-metre performance. (The darned wind picked up half way through the string and blew shots 3,4 and 5 almost exactly half a minute left. A friend who was spotting my shots actually called the wind picking up after I fired shot number two, but I shot through it, anyway.):
I am very fond of this rifle. Of course, no small measure of credit must go to the Krieger barrel.
My gunsmith, Bill Crosby, actually told me that these actions are respected in some quarters as much as pre-'64 Model 70s.
