I am about to start loading for a .308 99f I bought a couple years ago but just put it in the safe until now. I already load for a 99 in .300 sav and I use flat base 150 gr interlocks due to the .300's short neck. it is very accurate with them.I have a glut of .308 bullets as I also load .30/06. I have Speer grand slams in 150 and 165, interlock sp in 150 and 165, sst in 150 and ballistic tips in 150 gr. So I have a few to experiment with. My questions are, do you like flat base vs boat tails in your 99? What weights are you getting best accuracy? thanks

Been shooting 160 FTX hornady's in my 99f, same bullet l use in the 300 savage. It the one for the 308 marlin express # 30396
Works fine on elk and deer

165 gr Nosler Partitions. More accurate than I am.

I agree with Ganderite however - every rifle has its own tastes.

I'm interested in what loads some of you come up with for the Savage 99.

I have a friend who shoots this, he doesn't reload, and it's getting harder to find.

I've told him to keep his brass, and I bought a second hand set of dies. At some point, I'll likely end up reloading for him, so I'm watching this thread with interest.

I bought a couple of boxes of 150gr flat base soft points for that purpose, but I keep shooting them in my M305...

Sorry, but do you mean that .308 Win is getting hard to find?

My 99C in .308 likes 43 gr of Varget under 165 gr Partitions. Not a particularly hot load, but it prints very well.

I use 150 gr Hornady Interlocks and 4895 in the .308.
Since the .300 Savage has a 1 in 12" twist it shoots 125 gr Nosler BT beautifully and they kill deer in their tracks.

In the two .308 Savage 99's I have loaded for, neither would take loads as "heavy" as those that typical bolt actions would digest with out problems. They shot accurately and functioned reliably with loads that were about 2 grains lighter than were otherwise OK in bolt actions. Sticky extraction and other over pressure signs like dimpled primers showed up quicker in the 99's. Good reliable rifles, just don't over do the powder charges for them.

that's your rifle -I have a 99c in 308 that sees nothing bout 308-180 spire point and 45 gtrains of 748- and I can cover a quarter at 200in 5 shots- I actually found the 165s grouped worse

No, I mean that he's finding it hard to find .300 Savage commercial ammo.

Can you share what your load of 4895 is for this?

To be clear, I'm looking for a "standard load" for the .300 Savage model 99, as I won't likely get a chance to do the usual load development for his rifle.

factory duplicate load for the 300Sav and 150gr bullet is 43.2gr of imr 4320 @ 2659fps

imr4895 is listed as 37gr start and 41.5gr max with 150gr bullets
