ok, so new to the whole handgun game, been shooting revolvers for a little while. Took a tactical handgun class recently, and was given an introduction to semi automatics. wow. my accuracy and speed went up 300%. I got in to handguns for the purposes of an ATC (licenced freeminer, hunting guide, and helicopter pilot), but now rethinking my choice of revolver. ....

so, with a possible ATC in mind, (and the .45-08 armco conversion) who makes stainless 1911's? need to start doing some research.....

thanks :D

Pretty much every one who makes a 1911 offers some stainless variants; Kimber, Springfield, S&W, STI, Colt, etc.
Did I mention Kimber ? :D...

Dan Wesson's 1911s are all stainless...

But yeah besides that, just about all big mfgs make stainless 1911s. Colt, Springfield, Para, Smith&Wesson, SIG, STI, Kimber, etc etc.

Favourite is not stainless, and is a Valtro 1911A1 bought from P&D almost 2 years ago.

for stainless, I like my Smith & Wesson 1911, and IMHO the quality is much better than the colts which i have had.

Have you thought about what size of a 45?

Whether a full size 1911, or a commander size, or a para model which has an officer's frame (can still get a 7 shot mag) with a commander length slide. The last is the most compact and it is still restricted and not prohib.

Stainless is slightly heavier, but think about a lighter frame for carry if you need to. regards

Looking hard at the Springfield Milspec. was shooting one today. felt very good in my hands, and I like the very spartan sights. good and simple.

will see what I have figured out when i get back to canada (few more months)

darko's Dan Wesson Bobtail (above) is my current drool material, there's a feature about it in the current special '1911' edition of Guns n Ammo on store shelves now. Lots of good looking steel in there, if you want to get more ideas. Decent articles too, such as customizing or special ordering, different sizes and calibers, etc.

Not necessarily in order of preference but.........

1) Kimber Eclipse.....oh, so ###y
2) Dan Wesson Pointman 7.....felt really good in my hands and built like a tank
3) S&W....any stainless one, I'm a big S&W fan
4) Springfield's Black Stainless.....yum, yum teflon.
5) STI.....a lot of people swear by them and not at them and I was impressed by the stainless Ranger II I put a box through.

I hate to be the voice of doom but I saw a post here recently that said that the 'new, improved' CFO for BC had decided that semi-autos weren't suitable for ATC use and had not only decided not to issue ATC's for semis but not to renew an ATC for a semi. While this makes no sense to me, it's just stupid enough to be true. For an ATC semi, I'd talk to Gunnar - he'll make you one that WILL kill bears dead, 1911 style!
