I would like to know who makes the best/most accurate rifled shotgun? I'm looking to buy one and would like to know whatyou guys think.

thanks,

Each gun of the same model may shoot a little different.

It all depends on what kind of accuracy you are looking for and what your intended use is.

A rifled barrel, good sabots and a scope and you can easily kill deer at 150-200 yards.

Open sights and a smoothbore barrel and you will have a tough time seeing anything through the sights past 75 yards.

I should have narrowed it down abit, I am mainly looking at pumps and bolt shotguns. autos are more expensive and are not any more accurate then a pump or a bolt. price wise, I don't mind paying for something that is going to be accurate and reliable.

I have looked at Savage bolt, Remington Pump, Browning BPS, Tar-hunt DSG and benelli nova. I have no experience with any of these shotguns, so I was hoping someone on CGN would have some experience with these and hopfully help me pick a good deer gun.

shotguns

Hi, I hunt a lot with shotguns. I've used a Mossberg 835 Ultimag, worked excellent but was pretty heavy to pack around. I've since went to the Rem 870 20 gauge, has more of a rifle feel to it and much lighter.

Arch :)

Like Waterfowler said, each induvidual gun is slightly different also. Ammo also has a lot to do with it as well.

Not shotgun related, but my S&W M41 can chew the X-ring out of any target (the gun, not me) with Federal ammo; but with Winchester ammo, It can group about 4"

boomer, I am considering a savage bolt but would perfer a pump and I don't think they make the A-bolt shotgun anymore. I like the tar-hunt custom rem pump because the barrels are fixed to the reciver but are they available in canada?

I know ammo can make a huge difference in a rifled shotgun, but I will be trying lots of different loads to see what works best.

It comes down to how accurate you want. Do you want to shoot tack heads or kill deer???

If you want to kill deer, I would get a pump gun, Nova, BPS, 870, whichever you prefer, with a rifled, cantilever barrel and put some good glass on it.

Try and get a hold of Bigredd. He really seems to know what he is talking about in this category (not that anyone else here doesnt). But it seems that him and people he hunts with have tried just about every thing out there. I had even got ahold of him once or twice on the same subject.

The best buy for the money is the remington 870 combo, with rifled barrel & bird barrel, in 12 or 20 ga. They usually go for around $500 new. This gives you a lot more options and 50X more accessories than the "specialized" bolt slug guns. All they do is fire slugs. Browning and Benelli's are great shotguns, but the rifled barrels are almost the same price as the whole gun, $400 -$500 for just the barrel.

I'll throw my .02 in.
I bought an SSi-One slug gun last year from SIR. I actually never wanted the slug barrel (I hunt BP), but that's what was available....so I bought it and ordered the barrel I wanted (Turkey). Anyhow...the turkey barrel never happened, and the gun sat in the safe for a year. Three weeks ago Just for kicks I threw on a 1.5-5.5X scope and took it to the range. Shooting winchester platinum tips it was shooting under 2" at 100, and the ported barrel actually made it nice(r) to shoot. I am very impressed with the build quality of these guns. They actually started with a 10 ga blank to make the rifled barrels, which gives a much more rigid barrel.

I almost don't want to sell it!

I have a Remington 870 with a fully rifled barrel with the cantilever scope mount. I have a 1.75x4 bushnell trophy on it right now but that will soon sport a leupold 2x7. Haven't done much testing but did get 2 deer in December with it using partition gold slugs (2 3/4in) I have some 3in barnes expanders I may try out. I will evenutally sight this puppy in at about 125 and shoot out to maybe 175 since in S. Ont my shots more than likely wont be that far away.

I'm looking to get a cantilever bbl for my 870/SP.

I notice that there are both fully rifled and Rem-choke bbls available. Is there any difference in accuracy between the two?

IMHO Regardless you have to get into the store or borrow one from a friend and shoulder it and see how it fits you...all good choices above.

Also adding that some have had great success with the Mossberg Rifled barreled shotguns as well.:)

I am not sure if there is much accuracy differance between the two. But the explanation that sold me on the fully rifled barrel by a gunsmith was the fact that the slug has all that time in the rifled barrel to make a nice smooth spin before it reaches the air, vs. being forced to spin in a matter of about an inch and a half or two inches or so. Im sure however that people have tried both and have differant opinions!

That is a straightforward and very convincing explanation:)
