Who now has an SKS magazine with a nice drain hole in it?

Happened to mine also. To repair, I could weld the piece back in, but I expect it to break off again. What about wedging a small wood block in the bottom of the mag to repair?

Not sure about the legalities of bringing them in upinned. Maybe others can comment.

If this were to be done, you'd be better off attaching the pin on the follower rather than the mag. This was covered (with photos) in other postings. Just do a search.

I'm pretty sure its illegal to try to bring them in unpinned.

Hello everyone,

I am a dealer who is trying to fix this problem. I need hard evidence to suppliers that this happens. I am flying off to Russia and I need to have images with me that this happens. If you guys want it to be fixed for future shipments email your picture to contact@westrifle.com . You can send it from your friend email. I don't need your name or your address . I am not a cop. Those pictures are only for research purposes to prove that this happens and to change pinning process.

Can you bring back some pinned ones, to possibly sell to replace the ones that have broken.....

Now that would be of benefit as well....

:)

I will look into that. It is much harder then you think. Laws and regulations on both sides are stopping that. Plus everyone wants it at cheaper cost which is not always possible.

Because the hot glue way is now illegal

The method of making a high capacity magazine legal in Canada once again is open to wide interpretation. Even the regulations state you can use types of glue. The bottom line is make your SKS mag hold only 5 rounds and you will not have a problem.

Regulations Prescribing Certain Firearms and other Weapons, Components and Parts of Weapons, Accessories, Cartridge Magazines, Ammunition and Projectiles as Prohibited or Restricted
SOR/98-462
Registration September 16, 1998

[...]
(4) A cartridge magazine described in subsection (1) that has been altered or re-manufactured so that it is not capable of containing more than five or ten cartridges, as the case may be, of the type for which it was originally designed is not a prohibited device as prescribed by that subsection if the modification to the magazine cannot be easily removed and the magazine cannot be easily further altered so that it is so capable of containing more than five or ten cartridges, as the case may be.

(5) For the purposes of subsection (4), altering or re-manufacturing a cartridge magazine includes
(a) the indentation of its casing by forging, casting, swaging or impressing;
(b) in the case of a cartridge magazine with a steel or aluminum casing, the insertion and attachment of a plug, sleeve, rod, pin, flange or similar device, made of steel or aluminum, as the case may be, or of a similar material, to the inner surface of its casing by welding, brazing or any other similar method; or
(c) in the case of a cartridge magazine with a casing made of a material other than steel or aluminum, the attachment of a plug, sleeve, rod, pin, flange or similar device, made of steel or of a material similar to that of the magazine casing, to the inner surface of its casing by welding, brazing or any other similar method or by applying a permanent adhesive substance, such as a cement or an epoxy or other glue.

Been a long time since I did one of these, but I seem to remember that
I spot welded a piece of flat iron about 3/4 in square on the arm and never
had any complaints with that method and it doesn't bugger up the mag body.

I haven't had this happen to me yet on my Norinco SKS. Haven't shot my Tula yet. Is this going to happen no matter what or are there people who have shot thousands of rounds and the mag has held up?

This is really noty a big issue if it happens. The method to fix is as follows:

1: Clamp a pie ce of copper of brass sheet into the bottom of the mag to cover the hole. Then either TIG or wire-weld over the hold and dress the exterior. The copper-based plate inside will not stick to the weld and will keep the weld looking neat.
2: using same welder, weld a length of brad nail to the bottom of the follower. Use a plain carbon steel nail, not a galvanized one.
3: If cosmetics are importatn, get your local smith to drop it as-is into the blueing tank with his next batch. There will be minor discoloration where the welding was done, but oh well. It's an SKS.

LMAO!!! I just cleaned my SKS after a 3-gun shoot on Saturday and I realised that the Norinco is obviously a copy and not frankenpinned. My "new" Russian Tula on the other hand is frankenpinned. BTW sometimes I hate have to clean my SKS. It's in a hundred pieces soaking in BreakFree until I decide to put it back together.
