Who rattles for wt?

Looks like you head out towards brandon to hunt eh butch. Definitely some big dear in that part of the province.

i'm starting bow hunting for the first time this year. I plan on trying to rattle and call. There is a lot of deer where I plan to hunt. I see about 3 deer every morning on average on my way to work. But they are always does and fawns. I'm not sure if the bucks are just more noctural then the does but I never see bucks out cruisin, unless its hunting season then I tend to see more bucks then does.

great thread and beauty whitetails butch!!

rattlign is one of the best tactics I have ever used during the pre rut, I have seen them crashing like a train through the bush...if anybody here thinks it doesn't work, they should either give it a try or give it another attempt.....
you can't try it once and say it doesn't work, like anything else it eeds to be done on more than one occasion to truly verify whether or not it works

edited to add.. damn those are some impressive whitetails!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the proof is in the pudding

I have had great success using rattlin antlers. I use a set of 3x3 whitetails from an animal I took 10 years ago. I ground the tips down to about 2.5-3" so they still fit in my pack ok. I also use a doe bleat with the rattlin and I have had many deer run, crashing through the brush to get in on the action. Use your scent tactics for sure, cuz you can get some kinda close.

Its called scoutting and alot of it.Allot of time in the field, But its all ways the jealous ones first to criticize.Well get off your a$$ the big ones are not at your computer desk.More pics to come!!!Good luck to ya all that put the time in!!!

Nice buddy... and those non-typical scores are pretty good.
Oh yeah and if you ask real nice I will post some pics for you to be jealous of....

You sure Mike? This thread is sposed to be about rattling whitetails! Hey I wuz just grinding the guy cuz he jumped up and down about scores and numbers and such...
OK here ya go..... no rifles were used in the killing of these deer... the gross scores range all the way up to 180... all typicals taken with Shotguns, Bows and Muzzleloaders.
I gotta a garbage pail full of antlers out in the garage if ya wanna see them too....:p

Bigredd, d'you think mabe the right thing to do would be to give Butch a pat on the back for his trophies and maybe leaving it at that might be the right thing to do? ... or not?

Yeah I agree Gitter:cool:... but I got a thing about posting numbers... just a personal bias. And scores can be Gross or Net, Typical or Non-Typical. I think that qualifying an opinion by spewing out random numbers or scores is cheesy. I know Pot/Kettle... but I try!;)
I think its great that Butch shot some nice deer... and I asked for the pics and scores out of curiosity not jealousy!
Butch made a little crack about desk jockeys and jealousy... hence the sarcastc rejoinder.:p
I certainly would not have posted the pics if Mike had not asked. If Mike wants them removed from his thread I will gladly do so.
I may do so anyway because they detract from the thread which is supposed to be about Rattling Whitetails!

Rattling Whitetails... I agree with the other posters who commented on "Buck to Doe" Ratio being the primary factor in Rattling effectiveness.
In southern Ontario I would say that Rattling is not the most effective way to call deer. In areas where there has never been any significant hunting pressure curious and mostly immature deer will come to rattling. Also in the few parts of the province like the Northwest where the Buck to Doe ratio is over 50% Rattling can work in the early season quite well.
I have only rattled deer in successfully twice in my area and both times I was approached via the J hook. Because these deer circled my stand to get downwind I was unable to get a shot.:bangHead:

I'm learning more every year i do it.

Fresh Antlers work better than old ones.
Big bucks will often swing around and approach from downwind, even if this is out in the open.
If there is no wind and you've got a handle on your scent, they will usually try and approach from higher ground
It's real fun.

Good point about the fresh antlers Ike... you can "refresh" your favorite "rattlin rack" by submerging it in water for 24 hours just before the hunt. They sound completely different... just like the real thing after they soak up some water.

nice bucks! I'm jealous :D

I hope to have a 'mens room' like that sometime!

any of those bucks come with a good story? :D

They are all good stories to me... I'd like to hear more about successful rattling techniques. I can't really see the need for rattling in a long range or flat-land rifle area. But it would certainly be useful when stand hunting with short range weapons and in tight cover.

Nice looking racks.

I've never had any luck rattling for deer. I've seen several that have turned and run when I've rattled.

I have had much better luck with a series of grunts. All deer, bucks, does and even fawns have come to my grunts. Guess I need more practice with the rattles.

Yup, nice green wall of fame. Difference is that Butch took those deer "fair chase" - not from a blind over a corn feeder

Tryed rattleing for the first time last season in northern sask. on the old mans farm 4x5 instantly jumped up out of a stand of tall grass, scared the sh -t out of me. over the span oft the next 4 days we brought in 8 different bucks all of them 150 class or smaller.Did not see any realy nice bucks but the rattle bag I was useing definetly works.Late november and cold so the rut was in full swing.

We've used rattling to some success back home in MB. We often have 5-6 people in the party, so we are able to push some large peices of bush. But, when it's just Dad and I (he's coming up on 57 now) we've started to rattle. He always uses 2 different, fairly new sheds to rattle with. One spot we like to rattle is in a little slough about 300yds away from a section of land that has 60 acres broken, but is a wildlife refuge managed by the wildlife club. I'm sure a few jackholes go through there, even though it's posted no hunting, and no one has ever been allowed to hunt on it even when the old farmer was still alive.
However, we can hunt on the land right next to it, so this little slough has a rock pile which one can partially hide himself, and the rattler can me in a slightly smaller slough close by. The idea is that the deer is intent on where the sound is coming from, and hopefully won't notice the hunter planning to shoot said deer. We have quite a bit of room between the bush and the slough, so this will give us a large avenue to shoot into. So far though, we've had only does come out at that spot. We usually go out in the evening, about and hour and half to 2 before legal dark. But, we've only rattled there twice. I'm hoping next time that it will be a bit more productive. I hope that gives you a few ideas on where and how to rattle.
