Who says tang safety M77's can't shoot?

The only real issue with the factory bottom metal is that the front of the trigger guard can break if the middle screw is over tightened. This is easily corrected by using a spacer between the guard and receiver; rather than counting on the mag box to act as the spacer.

Furthermore, both the trigger guard tab and the tab extending from the bottom metal (pictured below) that overlay onto the mag box can bend, and as noted above, can possibly break off...

And an inability to recognize a potential problem. If either piece is bearing hard on the mag box, clearance has to be provided; either through bedding or creating clearance by cutting the mag box in the appropriate places. I think bedding is best but a combination of the two might be required.

Shot lots. Owned a few more. Never broke trigger guards. And it’s funny that the very best shooting tang safeties I’ve shot weren’t bedded. But success doesn’t create gunsmithing work. Carry on...

It's definitely a minor point, and not an issue for me. I just noticed some minor bending in mine, and I can see potential for breakage over time, however unlikely.

Believe me, I love these rifles and today's examples by Ruger don't compare.

I'll bow to experience. I probably wasted my time.

I think the Ruger haters say my model 77 wont shoot , however any gun in there hands likely wont work for them ,, I own a tang safety and with handloads it will shoot 1/2 moa factory ammo will shoot 1 moa ,,, so I wonder why this model of gun is determined to be not accurate enough for hunting ...

I really like the tang safety’s, I have however had one in 308 that I spent an entire summer trying to get it to shoot. Lots of bullet/powder/primer/seating combos and the best it would do is 3-4” at 100. Frustrating when another I have is shooting sub moa right beside it. Took a bear and a deer with it but sold it as I didnt like being limited to 200~ yards. Beautiful guns and have had others that shot lights out. I didn’t not however torque the action screws that high.

Another issue I have seen on multiple Ruger 77's is, loose barrels! I'm not kidding. many were barely hand tight. I ran into this frequently enough that it was one thing I checked off whenever there was an accuracy problem with a 77.

I like the Ruger 77 TS. Finding nice ones is getting harder. My last one bought this past winter is in 22/250 Rem. Shoots good no surprise there.

Nice wood on that one. Since I have two Boyds stocks and a steel bottom metal, and spare Allen screws and custom stock spacers, thinking of sourcing another and get it shooting well. Maybe a 243.

Thanks.
Another more recent nice one. This one a 220 swift w/ a 24” sporter weight barrel. An older Redfiield five star 4-12 sits on it for now. Need to buy some brass and see how it shoots.

That thing is in incredible condition! A sporter weight 220 can’t be a very common config. Interested to see how she performs

I have an older M77 in 243 that I used when I was a youngen. I now have it in my possession and working some loads in it. Looks very promising. The ammo I acquired with the rifle was only printing 2" groups at 100 m, but I figured I would give it a try and see what I could do with it with my own loads.

Range trip this week should finalize a load for it. The old scopechief on it will be the next pc that gets replaced to some newer, clearer glass with a better reticle. Might look at refinishing the stock, as it still has some dings in it from when I slipped on rocks with it in hand when I was 15 yrs old. My 15 year old will be using it soon. Aaaahh the memories with that rifle.

I shot some factory ammo out of the 220 swift today. I see no reason to believe this gun won’t be accurate especially when hand loaded.

That's some very decent groups, especially with factory Hornady. I am loving my 7x57, and always want to tweak it! It seems to be an MOA rifle with factory ammo.
