hey im looking at buying a .22 handgun (pistol not revolver) wondering what company i should be looking into or manufacturer.... also im new to handguns and would like to know more about the 1911 as it seems to be popular thanks..

You didn't mention if you were looking for a revolver or pistol. Ruger MkII or MkIII semi-autos are a popular first handgun choice.
 
I agree ^^

Ruger pistols are quite popular and not too expensive. I have a MK III that I've really enjoyed shooting. It seems to feed most brands of ammo reliably.
 
I am really pleased with my Ruger 22/45 mkIII. Cheap and reliable, it eat virtually any kind of ammo's. Almost everybody at my club have one of the Ruger MKI-II-III pistol. The availability of service and spare parts is a must in the world of canadian handgunner's. Elwood Epps always have some in stock + great service there.

I have a Sig Mosquito and love it, there are some people who had trouble with theirs but mine works great now, at first it was picky but now with about 3000 rounds through it it works great, and in my opinion is the nicest looking .22 out there. If you get one make sure the serial number is above 40,000, apparently these are the second generation.
 
Since everyone else has said Ruger, let me suggest Browning Buckmark.

PRO: Nice trigger. Well balanced for twirling. Fairly easy to clean.

CON: Doesn't look like or rhyme with Luger.

I have a Ruger Mk. 1 5.5in bull barrel I love for it's accuracy and excellent trigger. I recently put target handgrips on it, and look forward to getting it out to the range again.
You want something with adjustable sights if you're into target work. As for the 1911, you need to ask yourself if you can afford to feed one of them beasts! I dunno what one round of .45ACP costs, but a single round of .22 is about 4 cents.

While there are cheaper options in a .22LR pistol, if you really want a 1911 you should have a 1911 in .22LR. Beware the man with one gun. You won't regret having bought right - the first time.
 
You won't go wrong with either a Ruger or Buckmark. They are by far the most popular two pistols out there today.

There's a few other new options as well that seem to operate very well. I've shot the S&W Model 22A that the range owns and for a gun that is "range neglected" it's darn nice but since it sees cleanings rarely I noticed that it tends to FTE now and then due to the gumminess of the slide.

Like the 22A it is a little more demanding on the cleaning frequency with it looking for attention every 500'ish rounds. But it's well worth it as the gun is really fun to shoot.

There's some great classics from the used side as well. I've personally tried a Beretta 87 (pre piccatinny rail madness model) and a couple of High Standard models and all three were delights to shoot with a great feel and near match grade trigger.

Then there's a few others that have good reputations if you look around that are worth checking out. S&W 422 has a good history as well as their more expensive Model 41. And you'll find nothing but praise for the entire Colt Woodsman series.

There's others but these are the ones I've either shot myself or looked up their history on the web.
