Who sh$t on my canvas tarp at camp?

I found this at camp yesterday ….. and there are no bears in my area …. there have been no signs at all the last 15 years.

So who is the culprit?

Have you folks never seen ''choke cherry pits'' before?????

Depending on where you are, what was left behind for you is from something browsing on choke cherries.

This year is a great year for them. Lots of rain in some areas in the spring and long dry summers are perfect conditions for them to ripen properly and the fruit on the trees gets so heavy it's easily within reach of animals that can't usually get to them.

When Deer eat choke cherries in quantity, they don't spit out the pits and their stool is black in color, the same as fully ripened choke cherries.

I've also seen Coyotes snacking on choke cherries and the results looks similar to that in your trail cam photos.

My dog loves them as well, so with stools that size, Dog, Coyote, Deer etc.

When animals get a good feed of choke cherries, their stool doesn't clump well, especially with mature Deer and it looks similar.

If a Deer left those, there should be some tracks around the stools, if there aren't any Deer tracks then a Coyote, unless you have feral Pigs????? but they tend to leave more tracks than Deer.

Thanks bearhunter.

yes somebody seems to have found my chokecherry bushes ....

No wild pig signs or trail cam sightings in 15 years.

The scat did contain some fur/hair ..... so the culprit seems to be an omnivore.

And no tracks, ... the rain erased all the tracks ..... I only found fresh turkey tracks 10 meters away .... a turkey flock wandered trough camp just before I arrived.

I thought that those droppings were a bit large for a racoon .... I am wearing XL gloves ....

And the only other omnivore that I can think of would be a coyote ....

Or this would be the first sign of a black bear in 15 years ... ?

Thanks bearhunter.

I’ve seen tons of coon crap and that’s just an average size pile. That being said, why would you still hold onto the idea of it being bear crap when 6-7 people have said coon and not a single person said bear?

When was the last time you checked out a raccoons butthole? I’m not sure why they’re so large, but it’s no problem for coons to leave large turds.

Thanks "canadian hunter312",

I am not holding on to anything ..... I guess I am learning more about racoons ....

Thanks for chiming in!

I had the same thing down my driveway and was wondering the same thing. As for what I had looked more like coyotes dropping and didn't make sense till I read this thread. Good info.

Coyotes are dog-like but usually include lots of hair and small bones, and are quite dry. If they're eating a natural diet and not garbage or Dr Ballards some goof is putting out for them.
