I'm thinking it's time to get a new 22 because.....I want to
I work at a ranch that has quite the infestation of gophers and before anyone says anything no we don't need more shooters lol
The boss is gracious enough to supply employees with ammo but naturally he's not getting us Ely hollow points by any means. Whatever inexpensive case he gets is what I get to shoot for the summer lately it's been federal blue box stuff but has sometimes been Winchester or fed American eagle.
Up until now I have been using my cz452 of which is a fantastic rifle and if not for the fact that all my centerfire rifles are tikkas I would buy another CZ and call it a day.
The question I'm currently trying to answer is between the 2 rifles does anyone know which one will handle high volume cheap junk the best? I really ike my CZ's but there is no denying that 6-8k rounds through a rifle just like my hunting rigs would be beneficial.

Honestly no telling. Every gun is different I own three different CZ457 rifles all three seem to prefer different ammo’s.

Federal AutoMatch and American eagle and Blazer seems to do best in them as far as cheap stuff goes. NONE of mine do well with Aguila or even tac 22

I’ve been trying out ammo variants in my new 457 synthetic stock pencil barrel.

So far it is disappointing with all the usual cheap options including Cci SV. But it is OK with Aguila standard velocity and Tac 22. Seems excellent with Sk standard+ and Rifle match.

So not a cheap date, and none of its favourites are available locally.

Understandably, each rifle will likely be different.

The main problem with inexpensive HV .22LR ammo is that it's typically very inconsistent from one round to the next. Even the best barrel can't shoot such ammo well.

The only way to know which rifle of the two rifles would shoot inconsistent ammo better than the other is to shoot a lot of rounds with each and compare. No one can predict which it might be. Both could easily shoot just about the same. Neither one can "like" such ammo. It doesn't work that way.

These Savage Mark II FVSR rifles in 22 LR are extremely accurate!.....:)

16.5" fluted heavy carbon steel barrel, comes with a Weaver type scope base, and takes 10-round and 5-round magazines. Accutrigger is epic and easily adjustable. Barrel is also threaded with a thread cap protector.

Firearms Outlet Canada has them in stock. $449.95 is an amazing price for this little tack driver!......:)

Tenda has them for $419.00....:) (even better!)

And P&D Enterprises for $470.00. (shocker, since the new owners bought from Phil & Dianne, always more expensive)......:(

If you already have a CZ then I say go with the Tikka. Then you can have one of each and see if you prefer one or the other.

I love my Savage Mk2s but if you've got Tikka/cz money then I would get a tikka or a CZ... I'm not sure Tikka/cz is any more accurate - heavy barrel Mark IIs shoot pretty good - but they're overall nicer rifles. Although that might not be an advantage on the farm lol

My initial thought is buy the rifle you want. If your boss doesn't buy the ammo for it to shoot good... Buy your own ammo and tell your boss it shoots better with these rounds. Your talking 22LR ammo?
If your shooting yotes too maybe think of a rifle that does both good like an HMR round or something similar.
I'm sure you will find what works. But if your buying the rifle... Just get what you want.

I have a mk2 that's still in its original open sight configuration. I used to really like savage but the fit and feel of the new stuff is not to my liking.

I want both of them but finances only allow for one. I'm not the only one using the ammo he buys. Everyone else is fine with whatever he gives them so it would be rude to refuse it and ask for something else. As for using a 17 with the extreme high volume it's not cost effective to shoot 17 and I have proper coyote guns for coyotes anyways. 😂

For the price of some 22 ammo. How much would it really cost you to bring your own ammo ? If that’s such a concern ?
Just a thought.
Rough count depending on how much I have time to shoot I can buy a brand new savage with the savings that come from not having to buy my own ammo. (Roughly $5-600) Not saying I dont have days that I bring my own tailored ammo but as a whole the cheap stuff is going to be this rifles main diet. If it were up to me id shoot Eley HP or CCI segmented hollow point at everything but that's just not realistic for me.

I hear ya...The others are giving good advise. Cheers
