consider the size of the caliber (even if they're FMJ) and the extremely low cost to shoot, I would think you'd read more about people using an SKS or other 7.62x39 rifle on the lil buggers...but you don't, or at least, I haven't noticed.

any of you use this rifle or this cartridge on em? R:d:

I would assume this is due to there not so astonishing accuracy against small targets. Regardless I think it would be a great bit of fun. I was actualy thinking of pickin up an SKS for this exact reason.

Most of the farmers I have permission with say no FMJ and being there are cows in the field next or sometimes the same it only makes sense.

I shoot at an awful lot of gophers and I hate to think of the collateral damage I'd have done with ricochets if using FMJ, that and the lack of any kind of accuracy is a real turnoff. As it is I really have to watch my backstop when using cast bullets on gophers.

My hunting buddy uses his but I won't. And I won't go out when he is, either. NOT an appropriate rifle for such targets in my opinion. And I love that rifle. I have 3. One of which is capable of shooting gophers. But, FMJ in farmers' fields? Not for me, thanks. I like knowing where my backstop is and that it will be a backstop.

Nope.
Overkill and too much stuff flying all over hells half acre.
Stick to .17's and .22's.
Keep the 7.62 for yotes.:D

Nothing bigger than my .22 k hornet(35 gr vmax) for me. I'm amazed at how far a .22lr can keep on skipping, sending up dust. I don't want to launch anything with the mass or toughness of a .30 cal, esp in the numbers involved in gopher shooting.

I've hit em with SKS and an old Enfield .303. Good practice, if you can hit em with that you can hit em with just about anything. Also they pop like a zit in a fairly spectacular fashion.

SKS don't rate very high on the accuracy end of the spectrum. I take pride in shooting gophers at long range with 20 and 22 calibre centre fire stuff. Any fool can kill a gopher at 30 yards...

As I said, I wouldn't use my SKS for gophers. The range I need to shoot is just too far for that level of accuracy. 50+ yds with a pattern of 4MOA?? That's just luck and I have no intention of sending that much FMJ careening around the countryside. Esp with cattle in the next field.
However, that being said...I have just discovered that Hornady makes a 123gr V-Max bullet in a .310 dia for the SKS. I am ordering some and loading it for my Rem 799!! Now those things out to 200 yds had better look out!!

Every farmer that I have contacted and shot on their property during my many years of gopher shooting...WILL NOT allow any high power rifles to be used. The cattle and equipment they have are too expensive for the shooter's weapon choice or shooting practices.
The .22s and the like are welcome. Most shooters are welcome with offers to reimburse for the ammo used. I am headed out to my "spots" on Sat. for a 10 day shoot and if it is anything like last year, it will be very fulfilling .

Took out my CZ 858 once. The FMJ ammo just poked holes in the gophers, though it did toss them up in the air. However, those bullets did bounce quite a ways. I don't think I used more than one magazine.
