who still uses a 303 british?

I've got three .303's. A #1 mk4, a Ross M10, and a Ruger number 1. Holding out for a Winchester '95 in decent shape for a good price. Seriously beginning to doubt that I will ever find one at a decent price, but I can dream, right.

I handload, so I have zero issues with the performance of the round. Mostly mild cast boolit loads, but if I need to hunt something large and hairy, I can load up (within reason: I don't need a magnum) I would like to try handloading Accelerators to see if they work in my rifles as well

The .303 does everything I ask and that's all that I require.

:)A 303 is what I started out with and there's always been one in the safe. The first was a Simpon-Sears sporterized Lee Enfield, and actually there've been two in that configuration that I've had over the years. Living in the B.C. central interior at that time, I never experienced putting Moose down.;) Most often, rifle in that calibre most frequently in residence in the safe has been in the form of a Jungle Carbine. I'm on about #5 at the moment and this one is MINT with the original sling, bayonet with sheath etc and a spare mag. This one,;)likely the last, is a keeper and while field use has been/is very limited, it's still nice to take out on occasion and scare the spiders out of the barrel.

I really need to use mine more. I bought a full wood Savage No 4 Mk 1* years ago, and to be honest it's been a safe queen with the occasional trip to the range, but more often then not it has been riding the pine while other milsurps get called up to play.

Thinking I should change that this coming fall!!

 I've had similar feelings of guilt. However, for here on the Island, I've 'decided' the 7x57 Mauser will be my PRIMARY go to choice.

I still use the one I got my first deer with, a No.4Mk.2, full wood, no-drill scope mount and an old Weaver K2.5. That's a never-sell rifle. I also have another No.4Mk.2, sporter, and a No.5. I've used .308Win and .243Win for deer, but the .303British will do everything I need a big game cartridge to do and I don't practice enough to get all it has to give.

:)The C.I.L. or Dominion 215gr was my dear old Dads personal choice for Moose in my early days starting out on big game. He'd be giving you a thumbs up about now:d.
I have more than a few hundred 215 KKSP's squirreled away John, along with a pile of 150, and 180 Sabre Tips, KKSP's and CPE's.:p
I tend to load them in older C.I.L. and Herters brass for nostalgia's sake.

;)If you ever decide the 'squirrel' needs more room:p and you want to part with 100 or 200 of those 215's, give me a shout. Good chatting again Cat. Our last time was during donations being set up for hunters that suffered losses in the Ft. Mac fire.

Yes I remember that John!
I will check my stash and see what I can come up with!

Yes sir, i am loving my 303 these days, Ruger #1 . Sambar deer and Fallow deer- i use 150gr soft points at the moment with 2208, got 174 woodleighs to load soon.. i have used 215gr woodleighs but they were fairly hard and not ideal for the smaller or immature models.

The 303 has probably taken more big game in Canada than any other calibre, mostly because for a long time a sporterized Lee-Enfield was the only thing most of us could afford.

Not a big fan. I understands its merits as a cartridge and the nostalgic appeal of some of the rifles so chambered. My opinion is probably colored by only having used it in home sporterized Lee-Enfields that offered less than ideal fit, awkward scope mounting and accuracy that was distinctly meh. Recoil wise I found it very similar to a 7mm-08 or .270 without equaling either in performance on game, opinion based on my experience not fact, it can probably nearly match either with properly chosen handloads but I wasn't reloading before I soured to it. In a modern rifle with modern tolerances my opinion may be swayed. With iron sights I can't shoot it well enough for its flatter trajectory to overcome the extra recoil and cost over a .30-30.
I'd be willing to hunt with one if it meant the difference between going or not or if I was confident in my abilities with a particular rifle. Of course I'd be as happy to use a 6.5 creedmoor and it has a lot of marks in its favor towards rapidly building confidence in my abilities with a rifle it is chambered in. Neither .303 or 6.5 would be my first choice for a NB moose hunt if I ever get drawn or asked to go as a second gun.

I would be happy to hunt with nothing but a 303. Not a great choice if you are joining the extreme range "hunting" craze which is so popular lately, it is an excellent cartridge out to 350 yards or so, on most game. One of my 303's is an iron sight gun while the other has a scope, mounted low, in Weaver mounts.

:(Didn't mean to offend by inquiring about the possibility of some of your C.I.L. 215gr KKSP being available for sale. Just thought on the off chance some were available, I'd hate to miss out on the opportunity. In the meantime, I'll fill that weight option with the 215gr Woodleigh I have.
