Hey all,

Thinking on buying a Shilen Prefit for a Savage, in 17rem. Any suggestions for a gunsmith to do the install?

Thanks,

PM's work too if you don't want to post here.

Have you thought about doing it yourself? It would be cheaper in the long run if you do multiples.

Im looking at picking up a wrench and vice that a guy makes and sells in the EE. Good price

I offer barrel nut wrench and barrel presses. You can check my website or pm me.

For the exact procedure you can google savage barrel swap and you'll find al the info you need. When you order the barrel make sure to order a go-gauge for the caliber.

I know most would just install it themselves. I would not feel comfortable doing it myself. And by the time I buy the gear, for one barrel it wouldn't be worth the cost investment.

Takes about 20 min to do yourself. Can always sell the tools after too. Or find some friends that need savages rebarreled and giver. Hard to screw it up with go and no go gauges.

Alright, I'll preface this with...I don't own one.

On the other hand, a good friend had given me the take off barrel from his, when he switched to a .17 Fireball, and the end result was that he ended up asking me, rather hang-dog-ish, for it back. Which he got, along with my laughter and a reminder that I HAD actually asked him if he was SURE he wanted to give the barrel away!

Buy the wrench, do it yourself, keep the wrench and the barrel tucked into a corner of the safe, and you can always go back, or add it into the pile when you sell the rifle.

Jerry at Mystic Precision, IIRC, had posted the technique he uses to install his own barrels without using a actual gage, where he uses a 'reference' cartridge he keeps for the purpose, and adjusts the barrel in to contact, then backs off a determined amount to set his headspace. He is not the only one I had read that uses the method.

It ain't brain science, it's more like rocket surgery, eh? :) Maybe a little less complicated than that!

As Trevj said this is the beauty of barrel swapping, you can use the same action and have many different caliber for all your hunting/shooting situation. I have short action that I use mostly for long range with a 28" heavy barrel. I use the same action and put a featherweight barrel in the winter for coyote hunting.
