Who trains their own gun dogs?

1)- Join a club. Even basic dog obediance will train you how to train your dog. Once you're in, you'll meet other like minded folk.

2)- Hate to say it, but Wholesale Sports had the best buys on trg dummies (been awhile since I've bought though).

3)- Golden Retreiver. Great for a beginner as they're smart, tough, and want to please you. When buying, make sure that they're bred for field vice show!!!!

groundskeeper willy, I like the German Deutsch Drahthaar. Also loosely called the German Wirehaired Pointer, but NOT the same as the Drahthaar has to pass tests to be in the breed book... The Drahthaar will retrieve, point AND track blood!!! I recommend you do a little reading about their breeding program. If you want a racehorse, buy a racehorse... The German dogs DEFINITELY are the caddy of hunting dogs in my opinion!

Look here... http://www.vdd-canada.ca/ Now GET ONE!!!

I used to have a Hungarian Vizsla and let me tell you thats a true hunting dog. I trained this dog to do everything short of writing a novel, seriously, this dog would track, point, retrieve, go on hand signals, climb trees, speak(limited vocabulary), gaurd... This really was the ULTIMATE dog and friend. Unbelievabley obedeint at home and a serious hunter in the field.

In regards to your question about training I would recommend the NAVHDA training manual. The North American Versitile Hunting Dog Association is basically a club for this type of breed( pointers, setters, spaniels...) and their hand book is quite simple to use but very effective.

Which ever breed you decide to go with do yourself a favour and be very diligent and firm with your training for at least the first year to year and a half, you will thank yourself later.

Good luck with the purchase if you decide to do so but look into the breeds and find whats best for you and your application.

Many gundogs only require time afield... and some will even train the hunter
Beagles are like that... once you figure out how to catch them your good to go

i'm on my second lab,i was a member of the middlesex HRC club-hunting retreiver club when i lived in London. Then joined a retreiver club in Vancouver when we moved out there. They are full of people to train with and have probably dealt with every problem imaginable. There are always people in the clubs that are overbearing so you'll have to take their advice with a grain of salt.

#### Wolters has some great books-for the retreiver-- water dog
I am sure he has books for upland as well.
I would say go out to some local Hunt tests, field trials or training days and check out the differant breeds.

i use my lab for waterfowl as well as upland hunting.
