Who else loves using irons as a primary sight? I have run ACOG's, red dots, and variable scopes on my Swiss Arms, yet always seem to take them off to run the diopter sights, even for 3 gun. They are just so rugged and accurate! I've lamented not being able to use good irons on my other black rifles, as they often come without irons, so I have some KAC micro BUIS on the way. I'm thinking they will likely end up on my Modern Varmint... as primaries f:P: I've also got a KAC SR15 coming, which obviously has a set on it.

So, how many others love running irons? And if so, what are you using?

I have irons on some of my rifles but I always run an optic. There's really no arguable downside to them as far as I can see.
That being said, I'd love to have an old school A2 carbine and run it strictly with irons.

I like irons.

I like irons and use to shoot them effectively when I was younger. Since needing glasses 10 years ago, I prefer lower power magnification with illumination, followed by a good RDS in second place.

I used to like my iron sights, but as I have aged, I have found that all my front sights were wearing out and getting fuzzy. New replacements were all worn out and fuzzy as well. I've had to switch to glass on many of my rifles.

I prefer irons, whatever comes with the firearm - won't buy one without, because they are reliable, simple and cheap (just like me!)
If I were a mid or long range shooter, I would probably want a scope, but I'm not.

I ended up getting PRK laser eye surgery in December, so I currently have a new lease on life, and shooting. Things have never been this crisp (even with glasses), so my iron sight renaissance has begun!

Depends on application really.

For an ultralight or budget builds you really can't go wrong with a quality set of irons. They have worked since the earliest days of rifles, and continue to be an excellent sighting method.

For fast CQB, it is very hard to beat a holographic/ red dot sight. Both eyes open, situational awareness, and focus all onto the target rather than lining up irons.

For an all around AR, my go to is and will remain a quality 1-4 or 1-6 optic. Being able to handle CQB with a true 1x scope, but still crank up your magnification and nail targets at 600 meters is a huge advantage. They are the heaviest of the three common options, but are by far the most versatile. For a lot of guys shooting NR black rifles in Canada, a quality 1-4 will be more invaluable than they realize.

That's sure the truth. Hard to do any vermin or Varmint work with irons, even a small amount of magnification helps so much. I'm more a fan of an ACOG though than a variable 1-4. Eye relief sucks, but I've always seen and shot well through them.

So far the poll is basically a draw between optics and irons. That's quite surprising to me, I would think optics would be kicking by now. I'm sure there is some sort of bias going on with the thread title though ha.
