While the SKS has relatively low recoil (compared to my 4.5 lb single shot 12ga shotgun, shooting 3" Nitro Magnum Buckshot ), I am considering threading the barrel and installing a proper muzzle break. I have had the pin on, three slash cut muzzle brake that did absolutely nothing or at best, very little. Has anyone installed a quality muzzle break? Any feedback? Obviously it is going to get louder...!

I bought a more expensive pin muzzle break, and did notice a difference in muzzle rise, and even recorded it, on the phone which I lost last month.

I think it helped deflect about half the muzzle rise, but I didn't really notice a loudness difference to be honest.

Right, I was considering one of those. Reviews indicate that there is a relatively high rate of problems with that model, some (like yourself) rate them, others cannot get them to fit without filing/new screws etc. They are almost $100NZ over here, so I may as well pay a little extra and get a proper screw on muzzle brake.

This. Dont get anything else like the twist or clamp on. The screw always walks out no matter what.

I had no luck with the Chinese junk ones. Always work loose. The choate one works great if you can find one. Much better design. Don't know if it makes a difference though

I have installed one of these:

NcStar SKS Bolt-on Muzzle Brake (AMSKSB)

It elliminated muzzle rise and considerably reduced recoil. I paid about $27 incl shipping on eBay...

I have a cheap short pin on ncstar one on my Norinco, purely aesthetic though.
The pin worked loose, after a days shooting. I simply applied two teeny tiny drops of jbweld on each side of the pin. Won't come off for cleaning, but I can drench it in solvent to get it clean cause there is a milimeter or so space underneath for it to penetrate.

I put this one on one of my Russians. Haven't shot with it yet, but I like the assemply attachment, and the birdcage AR look. It utilizes the bayo lug which is fine, cause I removed to bayo for other reasons anyway.

That photo shows the choate.

I just don't see the point of making purely esthetic changes, it won't make you shoot any better. Save your money for ammo and more range time.

Yes, if you re read the post I mention the Chinese one then talk separately about the second one.

Well, when you have a few of them, you play.
Aesthetics are just that. No intended claim or desire to improve performance. No different than painting a stock or attaching a vented handgaurd.

All things aside ..........it will make cleaning after shooting corrosive ammo more entertaining.............Harold
