Yesterday I just proved to my fiancee why I NEED a bigger container to store my reloading supplies with more compartments to seperate bullet sizes. I was reloading for my 22-250 and used bullets for my 22 High Power. Caught the screw up before going shooting. Now I have to pull apart 120 rounds. For those not familiar with the 22 High Power, it uses .227 bullets rather than .224.
 
Lucky you caught the mistake, the pressure from those loads would have been an eye opener. iceman2 got it right; leave the bullets in their original containers, especially if you load two different calibers that are so similar in size. Just imagine the problem you'd face if you mixed 100 .224s with 500 .227s in a bigger container!

If you purchase bulk bullets that come in plastic bags, just open one bag at a time and load in lots of 100. Another thing you can do is use an obviously different looking bullet for each caliber, such as a lead tipped bullet for the .22 Hi Power and polymer tipped or hollow point bullet for the .22-250.
 
I always leave everything in it's original packaging except for what I'm loading, I put in a small plastic tupperware for easy grabbing. Nothing worse than being on a roll then fumbling to grab the last few bullets in the bottom haha.
 
They are in their original packaging. The fault was mine, which I admitted to. :D It was just a case of being too lax on checking labels. I noticed what it said on the label when I was cleaning up.

I have an ammo case that is divided up by the calibers. .22, .24, .25, .26, ...
I have been trying to think up a reason of why I need to take out part of a wall to make my cabinet bigger. Make an ammo closet instead of just a cabinet. :D

P.S. It wouldn't have been bad with the loads I did up. They were light loads with a slower than normal powder. Made em up to take my young cousins out shooting centerfire for their first time. The pressure on these loads would have been safe still.
 
Since you say they are loaded fairly light with a slow powder, I couldn't resist!
I would put the rifle in a tire with a string on the trigger and fire one.
I wouldn't be terribly surprised if you couldn't tell the difference, between them and a proper bullet.

No it wouldn't. .003" wouldn't make a bit of difference. Bullets are made of soft metal and would simply swage down to the correct size for the bore. I have fired many hundreds of .311" bullets down .308" bores and never noticed a thing.

I have heard stories of 6mm bullets being successfully fired down a .224 bore. The bullet swaged down and went out the muzzle as a very long .22 cal projectile.

I have never done this, but long ago there was an ad where a firm had removed thousands of .303 British military bullets from military ammo and had the bullets for sale.
In the ad they stated, "OK for loading and shooting in 30-06 or .308 rifles."
I thought that was a little strange, to have in an international shooting magazine, but they obviously knew what they were doing.
The theory on such things is that the bullet gets sized before top pressure is reached. By the time the full, peak pressure is reached, the bullet is a couple of inches or so, down the barrel.

The OP stated the loads were lighter than normal, that being the case I think you guys are correct. But had the .22-250 been loaded with maximum loads for 55 gr bullets, and had he actually fired a 70 gr .227 bullet (the only .227 I know about is the Hornady) which is an uncommon bullet weight to load in a .22-250, the story might have been far more interesting.
 
Years ago I made the same mistake with a max load in .223 and the same 70gr .227 bullet and proceeded to fire them in my AR-15... That was my first experience with a stretched primer pocket... Needless to say the rest were pulled... I was very green to rifle reloading at the time and when I asked for 70 grain bullets at the gunstore and the clerk unknowingly sold me a box of .227 cal bullets and I missed it as well...
 
Just because I was curious, I tried them out. No pressure signs at all.

But there is one sweet muzzle flash from the slow powder. I'm thinking of just using them. The cousins will love the muzzle flash.

I loaded the cases with 32gr of H50BMG. No kick at all.
