Anyone ever cut down the stock of their .22 for their kids? How it it work?

I'm thinking about finding a marlin 795 stock for my boy and cutting it down then when he's bigger (and when I go rabbit hunting) putting the original stock back on. How did it work for you?

Years ago I lopped off the stock of a Cooey 60 for the kids and it is currently on its second generation of use. I think a good 2inches was the trick as even the smallest can shoot it under supervision.

I cut couple inches off single shot Lakefield Mossberg for my son in about 1985. Put the piece back on about 1990. In 2015, I redid that same stock for his son. This time around I realized kids need more than shorter butt stock. Also need smaller grip diameter, back of grip closer to trigger so they can grip properly and get little fingers up to the trigger. Got trigger pull down to about 6 pounds by stoning sear/trigger faces. Shortened and slimmed foreend.

When I cut mine down for my daugher I had her bend her elbow and hold her finger like she wss pullibg the trigger. Then I measured from inside of her arm to where trigger would be. Worked out perfect for her.
Scott....

did a old marlin a while ago. wood stock. if your going to do it take the buttplate off first, drill 2 holes up in past the point of where you will cut. save the piece. when your young one gets old enough you can glue in 2 dowels into the perfectly alighned holes and glue the piece you cut off back on

tape the stock with a good layer of masking tape before you cut it to help reduce shattering the edges

Thanks, I'll look for a stock to sacrifice and if I can't find one I guess I'll have to buy a Boyds for it.

I'm thinking it needs about 3 inches off, the puffy jacket doesn't help.

I should be doing some research first I guess.

http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/fs-fd/prohibited-prohibe-eng.htm

Definition of a prohibited firearm

a firearm that is adapted from a rifle or shotgun, whether by sawing, cutting or any other alteration, and that, as so adapted,
is less than 660 mm in length, or
is 660 mm or greater in length and has a barrel less than 457 mm in length,

My 795 has an 18 inch or 457.2 mm barrel. So... being over 660mm overall length and a barrel of 457.2mm it shouldn't be prohibited.

Just keep it over 26 inches long and dont cut the barrel shorter then 18.5 is semi. If barrel is already shorter, that is fine but dont let the rifle get below 26" total length

He looks like hes behind the gun too much? I feel like he should be more beside the gun and less behind it?

At any rate, I cut down the stock on my Maverick 88 pump shotgun. It was too long for me when I switched to shooting left handed. I did a quick thread on it, I'll go find it...

edit - here. https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1360234-Shortened-shotgun-stock

You can shorten the LOP for youth, but the rifle may still not be balanced. For the cost of a new stock, wouldn't you be better off picking up a Savage Rascal (big box just had them on sale for $189 - $30 rebate)? Let them grow into the 795. Just a thought.

Yeah I thought about it, we will have to stop in at a store and try holding a rascal.

Thanks, he is a bit behind it perhaps, but in order for his left hand have a steady hold shooting prone he really needs to move up.

Oh, he absolutely needs a shorter stock too. I am just pointing out that his positioning might be a little off, and keep that in mind if you shorten the stock - you dont want to shorten it too much.

I customized a Cooey model 39 stock that had been messed with previously and made a mentoring set. I reduced the overall dimensions to youth size and refinished and also refinished an adult stock as well and sold it as a combo. The fellow who bought it really likes it. Both he and his little one can shoot it simply by swapping stocks. Here are a couple pics:

When I was starting my kids, I considered cutting down a stock, then realized what has already been mentioned: it is more than just the length of pull. I made a new stock that was much slimmer, with a smaller grip diameter and radius, and slim and short forend. I also made it a couple of inches longer, then cut a couple of one inch sections off of it. As the kids grew, I would add a spacer. I kept this up until they could use the original stock.
The stock was made with an inexpensive hardwood, I believe birch. Could be easily done by laminating a couple of 3/4 inch boards.
Barrel length is not the problem, so no need to cut it really short. A normal 20 or 22 inch barrel would be fine.

The Rascal is a nice package.

It could be improved, in my opinion. I'd like to see Savage redesign the stock so that the buttstock's length - and the length of pull - could be easily adjusted, without any sawing or cuttting being necessary.

Why? The length of pull is still too long for some kids (LOP~10.5", BBL ~16.12", and OAL ~31.5", IIRC). The LOP could be shorter, out of the box, with spacers to take it up to it's current length.

An adjustable LOP of, say, 8"-12.5" would be more like it.

I got my hands on a second stock (price: 200 rounds of .22!) so I measured what my son needed for length of pull and made it an inch longer just to be safe.

I used the skil saw with a fine tooth blade

I still need to figure out a butt plate, maybe some JB weld or something
