I patterned 3/4 oz. loads of #8 out of my 20 ga. cylinder bore and was a bit dissapointed with the gaps. I'm thinking of trying 7/8 oz. of #9. Does this have the potential to fill in the pattern? (The game is recreational skeet)

I shoot cylinder quite often in my 20, it's works grand!:)
What brand of choke and ammo?

Its a fixed choke in both barrels (previous owner had barrels shortened 1"). I reload, so I've got lots of options.
If you can, try some BPI wads, the terap commander is a great wad for longer distances, and you can even customize some of their wads that come unslit.
Put your own slits in them to keep the shot together longer!

ninepointer,
That is a very light load with no choke. I would expect it to not look that hot on paper. I think you should try it on a couple rounds of actual skeet targets before you decide to change it. I think you may be surprised how well it breaks targets.

Try 3/4oz of #9's before you go to 7/8 of #9. 3/4oz is enough shot to get the job done - just like a 28ga payload.

Shot size will affect the pattern too.

There are lots of cut-down barrels that are running 25's.

Good luck!

Did you check the actual weight your loader drops. My PW bushing and my Hornady bushings for 3/4 oz 9, drops less than 11/16 with #8 hummason.

I've shot a few thousand skeet targets out of a couple of 20 ga. guns with cylinder chokes. I can't find any meaningful difference between 7/8 oz. loads of 8's and 9's, and have run more than my fair sharfe of "straights" with both ... in factory and in (old style hull) AA reloads. I typically reloaded with AA473 and later WSF (Super Field), but have also used Green Dot and Unique, both with AA wads and Claybuster clones. My favourite grouse and woodcock load is 7/8 oz. of 8's at the 1200 fps data level. Even at 3/4 of an oz. (the std. 28 ga. target loading) you shouldn't have any problem with cylinder chokes on clay targets or game out to 25 yards. These 20 ga. 3/4 and 7/8 oz. loads will be pretty pathetic when patterned at 40 yds.... however, at 20 yards you should be getting about 65% of the shot charge within a 30" circle.

I use a standard charge ( 1175-1200 FPS) of 3/4oz 9's in my 28 and the same only a 7/8oz charge in my 20 for partridge, it works just fine.:)
They don't take a lot of killing, and the pellets land just inside the breast, the ones that are not put on the neck and head - where they belong!!:p
