Who's using an adjustable gas plug on their "M14's" and..... do you feel it's offering a real improvement to fine tune your loads for better accuracy ?

Obviously it's not a mod that is "needed" but do you find them a worth while improvement ?

I doubt you will get much feed back here on that topic
1) they don't make them for Chinese gas systems and
2) an exceptionally small number of these have been reported in use here (on GI cylinders or m1a rifles)

best bet is to go check m14forum and if yer gonna use one on a Chinese rifle, you have some other parts to buy.... cylinder, piston ect.

Thanks for the reply 45ACPKING.

They would be for a Springfield (entire gas system is SEI) and a Chinese where all the relevant parts have been changed over to Smith Enterprise.
The only thing remaining Chinese are the receiver, barrel and op-rod..... and one of these days will change out the barrel too.

Thanks again for the suggestion.

it would work for you then ;)
not sure if those Schuster units are exportable but I do know that a few guys here have mentioned having them..... hopefully one of those guys will chime in with their experience.
I'll admit, it's one of the few m14 items I have not had the pleasure to play with.

I use an adjustable gas plug on a couple of my 7.62 Garands, but for reasons of functionality with propellants outside the specified burn rate, instead of accuracy. Better accuracy can be a byproduct as it can improve with different powders.

Can you recommend a gas plug for a Garand? The factory Garand ammo is quite expensive. Thanks.

Your best bet is to get one from Pocketfisherman right here on CGN. They resemble the McCann plug which features a number of hex head insert screws with varying size holes bored thru them and they work fine. He's run ads for them in the MILSURP EE before. Just PM him.

The schuster (sp?) gas plug is exportable from Brownelles.... Little side note, Brownelles sells all the parts necessary to install a SAI gas system on your Nork rifle (and a NM tuned Gas system to boot) and schuster gas plugs.. Last I checked, it was around $200 USD for the parts, so a little paperwork and its on its way.....

I ordered one, it fits my SAI, not the norks.....

The idea behind them is that it increases the "dwell time" (the time it takes the bullet to exit the muzzle after it passes the gas port and induces movement in the gas piston) which in turn reduces inaccuracy due to movement in the rifle.

I have not actually installed the part on my springer, I'm still in the "accuracy testing phase" of that particular rifle..... But it is something I'm going to try once I finish tweaking to see if it shrinks groups.

Most guys on the U.S. Forums that use them, use them to reduce wear on their rifles and don't report big accuracy gains.....

I've had some "fun" with a couple Nork gas nuts..... Increasing internal volume (drilling out material inside the gas nut) as well as drilling a .040 hole in the gas nut to vent excess pressure....

I have a short "brush gun" (shout out to 45ACP) that really likes the gas plug with the .040 hole. It digests Hornady custom 165 gr hunting ammo with no trouble and is fairly accurate to boot..... Accurate enough, I took it as my back-up rifle to Elk camp this fall! The down side to the .040" hole..... Chi-com copper wash ammo will not cycle the action enough to pick up the next round. The Hirtenberger ammo only works 50% of the time. This is a very simple fix IMHO, I have one gas plug that is drilled, and one that isn't, depending on the ammo I am shooting!

Cheers!

Thanks for the info notsorichguy.

Hoping you will post a report on your findings for the SAI and gas plug.

@ notsorichguy ---> I never tested that one with hurtinburger or norinco before I sent it out.... :( , just federal powershok and federal GMM.

I will defiantly do that.... Probably a "springish" eta.....

Very happy with the unit! I've done a few things to it (I just can't leave things alone)..... I bedded it into the USGI stock, more for astetics than anything else, and gave the stock a paint job..... But other than that (and the extra gas plug) it is "as received"....

Cheers!

My "Schuster" Saga by M

Picked one up on ebay only to discover the threads required a USGI gas system

Ordered a USGI gas system and all the bits and pieces from Brownels

The USGI gas system install required quite a bit of coaxing!

Found that I had to close the system in order to get any semblance of consistent action cycling with milsup ammo

Attempted a few reload samples. Same issue. Had to close the system in order to obtain reliable action cycling

Decided I didn't have time to mess with it and sold it

How much time and money do you estimate that little adventure cost me?
