Why 338 Lapua instead of 338 WM, RUM or Wby?

The question was why 1000 is the standard, one assumes in reference to the 338 LM as that is what started the thread. The answer is, because that's what the military specified. If all you want to do is punch paper at 1km, there are many easier choices. Personally, I would go with a 6.5-SAUM or similar. And yes, I do have a 338 LM, have had one for over 20 years. There is small advantage at that distance with the larger cartridge. - dan
