Why am I asking too much?

Fair price and wrong season. The only offers you will get are from the tire kickers who will low ball you and then disappear. I'm finding that about 3 out of 10 offerings go this way and lots of the big players are the first to crap out on you. If I hear, after "I will take it" and a week later: "If you get another offer take it". I guess they could not double their money in an hour or two so they leave you hanging for a week and then crap out. I have more stuff packaged and sitting on the work bench that will never be delivered. Think I will start to list a few of them as "the following please do not apply to buy this item: and then the names.

I guess I'm different then most, I do my research first, and will only make an offer on something if I intend on buying it...... Oldschool I guess. Still haven't bought any off here yet, so many guns for sale locally.

The answer to your question is all of the previous replies. There is an area between "Collector" grade and "Sporter" rifles that is sort of known as "Shooters." The rifle, while it started out as a Long Branch rifle, can no longer really be considered as one. The FTR modified it and while the drill and tap and wood repairs do detract to some extent for some people, there is another thing not mentioned yet. That is the chipped "Suncorite" painted finished. No Long Branch rifle ever left the factory with that finish, and the Long Branch rifles are regarded for their bluing and finish.

The people who will pay a bit more are those who want an "original" rifle, either for their collections, range use, or displays. Many of them are getting "turned off" by prices asked here on the EE for firearms, and are simply not willing to pay higher prices for ordinary or rifles that are not up to their standards or expectations. Speaking for myself, I would not pay $395 for this particular rifle, and I do like Lee-Enfields.

Given the dowels set into the stock to stabilize the bedding, and the holes, I suspect that someone might have been using the rifle for target shooting.

The Suncorite went on during the FRT. A Long Branch rifle which went through a FTR and the 1/3 upgrade is still a legitimate collectible. Those holes do not help its appeal as a collector's piece. Basically it is a representative specimen or a shooter, with nothing special to recommend it. I suspect that is why you aren't getting serious interest at that price.
 
I had looked at it and was going to make an offer, $395 for a Longbranch No4 Mk1/3! :runaway:. However, I then saw the holes in the reciever. The stock repairs don't turn me off, it is something that was routinely done. It means the rifle was looked after.

Now, looking at it again, it could be turned into a sudo No4T an not feel bad about further D&Ting it. Plus I had also seen a repro No4T mount in the EE as well.

Damn that is very tempting, but I've I have other stuff that I need (read: want) more at the moment. Hopefully someone will read this post and jump on it.
 
That price is more than fair Sir.
Rifle seems very solid all around.
If I had a hard on for Enfields and was in the market you wouldn't have it up for sale another 15 minutes lol
Patience is all I can say.
I had a 1903 Springfield "sniper" bolt on sale on the EE for a steal of a price for almost a year before it sold!
 
Not sure that I have much to add but...

  1. She has been drilled and tapped (collectors like me pay attention to this big time)
  2. Bore condition looks to be fair with rounded frosted rifling and pitted rusty grooves – typical neglected enfield bore.

You may have more success parting the rifle from the wood, slapping a cheap sporter stock on it and sell them both separately.
Please don’t take this the wrong way but I’d rather pay $800+ for a mint No4Mk1 than $350 for a rifle assembled from parts that is only in ‘fair’ condition.

Just my logic at play – no offense intended.

wait till bear season or sometime around novembrance day, i think 350-375 is a fair price but i think you also have those package savage rifles to contend with, alot of people go to ee looking for a deal on a "rifle" your gonna have to wait for a fellow that goes on ee just for a no4 and nothing else. Try posting the rifle on HACS look it up on google
 
The D&Ted receiver is a noticiable deficit. Are the bolt and barrel matching? all stamped pieces matching? All this comes into play. My best offer would be $250 shipped as i do not have one yet to try out. Will probably end up a bush deer gun or behind the seat in the truck. Definitely not a refurb item.
