Why an AR?.....

For:

They look cool.
One of the most ergonomic rifles I've ever seen.
Service history.
Modular, loads of accessories, tweaks, and customizations available.
Very light.
Accurate.

Against:
Reliability problems (real or perceived). I read a pretty good rant on this the other day, though I can't find it now. Defenders of the AR platform will say over and over "it works if it's clean". Keeping it clean is easy for those of us taking our rifles to the range and then home again, but in the field, you may be dealing with sand, mud, snow, all getting in your receiver, and not have the opportunity to strip and clean it. As they said, you should be able to piss in the ejection port to flush it out, and be good to go.

I don't have an AR yet (my first is on pre-order), and I think it's a great platform, and I intend to enjoy it. However, if I was conscripted into a military role, I'd probably be more comfortable trusting my life to a SIG/SAN than an AR.

for reliability all the ar needs is to be well lubed. sure it will work better if cleaned but it is not necessary.

You don't need to clean AR's as much as you think..
As long as you run it wet you can get a thousand rounds or so through it before it needs a cleaning
I rarely cleaned mine on a regular basis during my time in the sandbox, and it was common to hear the adage " a dirty rifle fires true"...( usually by the guys who were too tired to bother cleaning them)

AR's are reliable. I have trusted my life to the system, and would again in a second. Even with a pound or so of moon dust in it, it works just fine.

The people who scream loudly about AR unreliability are usually the half-retarded troops who don't know how to properly maintain their weapons, and those who have never used it operationally.

Being a civilian, I have no practical reason to choose an AR. I just think they're pretty. But not in an elegant, refined way like a débutante at her first high society ball.

More like Daisy Duke.
