Why are .410 slugs so rare?

A good friend of mine filled his tag yearly with a 410 loaded with slugs. They work quite well if placed thru both lungs. Out right flatten coons and coyotes.
Anyone saying they are useless hasnt used them or doesnt possess the skills to use them correctly.

A lot of people do more talking than shooting... They run out of steam pretty quick but calling them useless could only be rooted in ignorance.

I said expensive to start with and really quite useless... and for the vast majority of .410 shooting I believe that. I have been shooting for over 70 years... I never shot a coyote closer than 100 yards so slugs are really quite useless. Not legal to shoot most game animals with a .410 so slugs are really quite useless... small critters that you are allowed to shoot with a .410 are easily dispatched with cheaper shot shells so slugs are really quite useless... A .410 is a powerful little gun and has it's place but for the vast majority slugs are really quite useless... not practical in most cases...

Now they are not useless for the fellow that can only shoot slugs at his range and wants to use his .410 on a fixed target. Expensive but not totally useless.

Ive used remington green box slugs on coons and coyotes. Always clean pass thrus except one coyote i shot face on in the chest. I didnt bother looking for the slug when i skinned it but it didnt exit. Alot of bloodshot tissue thruout the entire chest region. Went straight down.

They arent long range options but if kept to archery ranges they do extremely well. Id bet the same as or better than a 45cal muzzleloader with round ball.
Much more decisive than a rimfire
Are they for everyone? No. But they are legal in ontario for deer

There is a big difference between 410 Foster slugs .... and solid boolits or a Brenneke ....

This video is great! Ive been shooting .410 at critters for a few years now and never knew the difference. I really like the versatility of a break action .410 for small game. My little savage 42 has been great for Skunks, racoons, and coyotes around my place. Never thought of big game with it, but good to know that in a pinch it could work with the right ammo.

I started loading these a while ago. With a broad side shot coyotes DRT very little fur damage , shots are on called in animals at about 25 yrds. And it is alot of fun. Makes my little sxs Elfason ( spelling ) a little double rifle.

Check out wax slugs on ytube.
You cut off the crimp, drain the pellets, then refill pellets w very hot wax.

Accuracy varies with shell brand fwiw

Yes, thats what you do for a Poor Mans Slug, or shortage/no stock on slugs, shtf etc.

Ok, I am the lazy type of guy … if we are talking about a shortage of ammo … and the poor man’s slug … before investing any time into making wax slugs, I would be shooting “cut shells”!!

Are cut shells a lost art?

Who has shot 410 cut shells?

I wonder if a 200gr bullet from an Ideal 386177 mold would be usable in 410
it's hollow-base like a minie bullet.
could be a bit undersized but paper patching can take care of that.

bought a 410 svarog slug mould from RU. Lets see what happens when it gets here. tbh its the first bit of reloading gear for 410 ive purchased so it'll take me a bit

I have never shot them through a chronograph. I am thinking that they drop pretty quick out past 50 yrds. I have not shot much past 30 yrds. 25 yrds seems to work best for any kind of accuracy.

I did have some boxes of Imperial 3" hi brass ones at one time. may have a couple kicking around yet.
Hardly see any slugs at the shows anymore.

I was going to suggest getting a .410 slug mold, if they're being made. Best solution I can think of, to empty the shot from a standard .410 shot shell and mold that into a slug then reload the slug and you should come out with something that's quite useful, since the powder charge matches the lead weight, right? OK, I'm not a reloader but it seems like a sound idea to me.

As far as how useful .410 slugs are, such things are dependant on for instance the number and skittishness of available game, the stalking skill and trajectory knowledge of the user, and no doubt a bunch of other variables that I haven't thought of. My default is such situations is to always go with 12G but OK that's just me and it would make for a very dull world of shotguns.
