The gunsmith may have been using a SAMMI gage which has tighter tolerances than the military standard. I always wondered about those "headspace horrors" The rifle was in tolerance when the military owned it, and I seriously doubt that any subsequent civillian owner could put enough rounds through it to change anything. Now mismatched bolts are another matter.
Oh by the way, the pics were great, but I wouldn't want to meet that guy assembling the STEN bolts in a dark alley!
