Why are most .22 magazines curved like a banana??

I've been wondering this for a LONG time. May be a stupid, unecessary question, but i remain curious.

I don't get why a lot of hi-cap .22 mags (10/22, remington, etc) are so damn curved like bananas.

Why don't manufacturers make mags that resemble the MP5 mags, like the marauder mags, for example)??? All rimfire rifles would look so much better IMO..

Is there a reason behind the extra-curved ones?

I know. First world problems. :p

i always thought it was just to make it feed better since one end is fatter than the other and it naturally forms a curve as they stack.

Just like .303, and 7.62x39.
Rimmed cartriges. Fatter near the rim. Makes a curve.

I thought about that, but then again, look at the .22 mags for the GSG5...or the .22 mags from promag for their marauder kit...

Negates that argument really.

You may find that the outside is straight but the inside feeding path of the mag is curved on some models. On other models the curve is still there but is reduced, as a resault the ammo sits in a somewhat unnatural position within the mag.

20rd .223 mags are straight.

I'm going to guess that the spring needs to do less work on a curved magazine, so that is why the 30rd magazine for the AR are curved.
That, and takes up less vertical space.

Ruger Mk3 22/45 has straight mags. Mk2 has straight mags too.
So there's no (engineering) reason to have them curved.
Not a rifle though.

True, though technically, those are not straight mags - they're slanted rearwards, which is another way to make magazines for a rimmed or tapered case feed the rounds reliably. The Buckmarks, Hi-Standards, Beretta Neos, Colt Woodsman, etc. are other examples.
