Why are most .22 magazines curved like a banana??

The slanted mags have one rim in front of the other. Curved mags have one rim on top of another.

True, though technically, those are not straight mags - they're slanted rearwards, which is another way to make magazines for a rimmed or tapered case feed the rounds reliably. The Buckmarks, Hi-Standards, Beretta Neos, Colt Woodsman, etc. are other examples.

true. My banana-shaped :D Savage mag followers are also slanted (not as much but still).

that is, the follower is slanted nose-up to allow the mag to stay below the bolt while reliably chambering the round.

The new promag 9-22 mags have the same curve as a MP5.

One of my .22 semi auto pistols has the rims staggered side to side so it looks like a double stack if you could see them from the rear. But the forward part with the bullets is narrower and forms a tidy inline single stack arrangement. Of course the last two before the one sitting ready to be stripped into the barrel wedge back to straight in line.

So a straight .22LR magazine COULD be done if the maker was willing to work it out with the rims offset and the bullet noses in line.

But yeah, normally that's not done.
