When I first got my pal I had no intentions on ever touching any of these. Now, I own 2 and am waiting for a sale on STV-40 after seeing it in action. Basically there so damn cheap I cant pass up. One day of work for a rifle that is a part of history. What makes these surplus rifles so cheap and why aren't they being bought up like crazy? The price for these things are crazy low. I understand there was millions made but they must be coming to an end soon, no?

The end of them all will eventually come, some sooner than others...and people have been and continue to buy them up like crazy.

They are cheap because millions were produced and stored until recently, and the fact Canada is the main country that can actually import them due to other countries firearm restrictions or laws (i.e. US can't import the SVT-40s or SKSs). Eventually like everything else it will end, but I already have the ones I am keeping.

.
Also, it is a source of income for the Country selling them. With the end of the "Cold War" and the collapse of the Soviet Union, millions of these firearms were just sitting in storage. Since these were obsolete or obsolescent then they were a ready product to sell.

The same situation was eviident after WWII. England and other Countries were almost broke from paying for the War, and there was a ready surplus of Lee Enfields, Mausers, and other Surplus firearms. These dried up during the 1970s, and the Swedish Mausers dried up during the 1980s. Now, we have the Soviet surplus firearms.

Will they last ----No. Eventually they will be used up and no more will be made. The AK-47 and AK-74 have replaced them, and are sufficient for the Soviet needs right now.
.

Hey, be thankful you can get these rugged and powerful firearms for such ridiculous prices !!

I picked up 2 SVT-40s last December when Lever Arms had an amazing sale... $199 a pop !!!

Also, the ammo is inexpensive and plentiful. Buy some on a regular basis so you will have plenty on hand when the revolution comes !!! ;)

Same rounds Yes, but the semis eat them much faster than a bolt Mosin.

Exactly! Makes a big difference to the wallet! x39 or x54r ...... either way! Perhaps you're chewing through 2 or 3 crates a year (of each?). Suddenly it's out of control & you're jumping on sponsors buy 4 crates for the price of 3 deals. Suddenly now it dawns on you that a crate of ammo costs the same or more than the rifle you're shooting it in. Relatively cheap, readily available for the most part & a big smile every time you pull the trigger! Welcome to the addiction!

Lee Enfields were dirt cheap at one time, as well. :)

Grizz

In the early 90's, I remember racks full of them at every gun store, for $99 each.

Surplus .303 ammo was everywhere too, and cheap. (I don't remember the price, but I could afford it and I didn't make much money back then, so it must have been cheap).

Then the government said everyone was a criminal and a bunch of gun stores closed, and everything sucked for the next 20 years.

Part of the reason the price is so low... Canada is one of the few places they CAN be sold... but all who want one already HAVE two. Gotta sell them cheap to make a third sale!
