Why are SKS, STV, mosin so cheap here?

Part of the reason the price is so low... Canada is one of the few places they CAN be sold... but all who want one already HAVE two. Gotta sell them cheap to make a third sale!

This. If they were easily imported into the USA we would likely have seen very few of them. Same reason we get the surplus ammunition so cheaply, the US banned the soft steel cored ammunition as 'armour piercing' even though the steel is quite soft. Basically thanks to the dimwits who've been running the States for the past decade or so for all the cheap commie stuff!

yup, in the mid 1970s they were in the low $30s.

In the early 90's, I remember racks full of them at every gun store, for $99 each.
.

I agree with all of the above , in particular the US ban and the down fall of com blocs left them needing money , created an ideal situation where we benefited from it.

glad the frugal Russian didn't destroyed them like we did with the C1 .

Not a major disparity. $30 in the mid seventies is nudging $300 at today's rate, so no real change. Sub $200 Russian rifles are an absolute bargain. (Edit - $75 Type 56's from Marstar were even better ;) )

Some of the above can be explained due to the inflation over 70 years , but there are also many other reasons why some prices increased dramatically ( Housing Bubbles. Middle East Wars, Weather problems causing food price inflation, Population explosion, ) it also can work the other way due to improvements in technology offering much cheaper goods for example TV's, Calculators, Computers ETC.

And watch when the current stuff on the market dries up a bit, prices will go up and then drop when the next batch from somewhere comes in.

But it won't last forever. This is the golden age of Russian surplus right now, enjoy it while you can.

very interesting data you provided but I was thinking of the actual items compare that to the consumer price index by bank of Canada .

my inlaws house in Vancouver .

1970 $40,000 , CPI $247,000 , appraised $1,000,000 (25x) .

my parents one ounce gold .

1970 $39 , CPI $240 , trading at $1200 (31x).

if I bought the LE and took good care of it .

1970 $35 , CPI $216 , fmv $300 (9x)

my inlaws oldsmobile, now it has 150,000 miles.

1970 $3450 , CPI 21,290 , value $1500 (loss) .

as you can see the best return was gold , LE was not bad return when you consider it was a hobby , how many golf clubs do you know that is worth anything after 40 years?
