Why are there calibre regulations?

I don't care what and yes it's been done but 22 cal is just not enought gun for deer unless you are shooting Roe deer.
It could be argued that if you load 70gr bullets it should do the job but everyone does not handload and some shmuck would try and use win whitebox in 223 with 45 gr bullets.

Plus why use a 22 cal if there is other cal's out there that would do a better job?

a) .22 cals. are for varmints...period!
b) under .270 has been on the books in Ont. forever....in certain counties near 905 area.....Victoria, Northumberland, etc. were o.k. with larger.....
c) shotguns only in populated areas because of the short range of buckshot!! Popular when law was drawn up!
Please note that I only agree with point a) !!!

If I remember correctly, if it is outside of deer, moose or bear season, we are not allowed to take anything larger than 223 into the woods.

We can also carry black powder rifles here in varmint season regardless of bore size and shotguns with shot size BB or smaller.

Bigredd, you can use a .270 in southern ontario for varmints. Anything under .280 can be used. I agree it is ridiculous but that is the law.
